Samhairg-óir
Ancient Golden Automaton
A towering, rune-etched colossus of burnished Irish gold, the Samhairg-óir moves with the patient inevitability of clockwork fate: an exposed, whirring central spindle behind a lattice of gears and a slow, inexorable rotation of interlocking rings. Its chest hosts a deep-set, pulsing sapphire-blue gem that casts cold light through filigree veins, and each rotation seems to drive not only its limbs but a pressure in the air that chills the soul. When it walks, the ground trembles; when it wakes, ancient farms and stone circles fall silent in fear.

Multiattack. The Samhairg-óir makes two Slam attacks and can use Arcus Beam if it recharges.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8+10) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature Large or smaller, the target must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Arcus Beam (Recharge 5–6). The Samhairg-óir projects a concentrated beam of cold-blue force in a 120-foot line that is 10 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 91 (18d8+10) force damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Objects and structures in the line take full damage and may be damaged or destroyed as normal.
Rotating Field (Recharge 6). The central spindle spins violently, releasing a whirl of centrifugal arcana. Each creature within 30 feet must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save a creature takes 45 (10d8) radiant damage and is stunned until the end of its next turn; on a success a creature takes half damage and is not stunned. The Samhairg-óir can use Rotating Field only if it has at least one functioning limb.
Reactive Overclock. When a creature the Samhairg-óir can see hits it with an attack, the Samhairg-óir may quickly divert kinetic energy to its plating, adding +4 to its AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Slam. The Samhairg-óir makes one Slam attack.
Spindle Sweep. The Samhairg-óir makes a sweeping attack with both arms that targets all creatures in a 20-foot cone. Each creature must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.
Pulse Release. The Samhairg-óir releases a brief pulse from its chest gem. Each creature of the Samhairg-óir's choice within 60 feet that can see the gem must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to Pulse Release for 24 hours.
Legends say the Samhairg-óir was wrought by a vanished phalanx of Ulster smiths before the coming of iron — a marriage of Druidic binding and impossible clockwork. Some versions claim it was commissioned by a forgotten High King as a guardian for hilltop sanctuaries; others whisper it was a failed bargaining tool of a Fae lord, a machine intended to hold a thousand oaths. Old chronicles from the scholar Aodhán mac Rígh of the House of Brenn speak of a 'golden sentinel' that would guard a stone of judgment, its heart-gem called an oighrig (eye-gem) that records vows in a language of light. Today the Samhairg-óir is rarely found in the open. It favors ancient ritual sites — crannogs, ringforts, and stones where ley-lines cross — where it sleeps standing, spindle turning so slowly its presence is mistaken for weather. It consumes no food but draws subtle ambient magical currents through its gem and grinding mechanism. Communities that revere old pacts sometimes seek its presence for arbitration; raiders who try to strip its gold find themselves crushed beneath inexorable limbs. The Order of the Blue Spindle, a secretive guild of antiquarians and wardens, studies one such automaton in ruins beneath Móin Ard, while the bard-scholar Brigid Ní Dhomhnaill published a fragmentary poem that some say is the Samhairg-óir's maker's manifesto.
Imagine a towering humanoid of hammered gold plates, height roughly twice that of a human two-story doorway — shoulders broad enough to block a castle gate. Its torso is open-fronted like a reliquary: concentric bronze rings and pinions rotate around a central vertical spindle, visible through gaps of filigree. At the heart of the chest is a multifaceted blue gem the size of a human head, inset in carved knotwork that channels arcane sigils. Limbs are jointed with exposed ratchets and piston rods; fingers end in blunt, articulated plates rather than claws. The head is a stylized helmet with slitted eyes; behind it, a thin halo of cogs slowly spins. Surface textures alternate between burnished, hammered gold with Celtic engravings and sections of darker, oil-stained bronze where the gears mesh. Stains of ancient verdigris run into runes. Scale reference: the Samhairg-óir fills a standard castle doorway and dwarfs a human standing at its knee; stray sheep look like pebbles beside its boots.
