Kagejin Satori
Blade Ascetic
A Kagejin Satori moves like a shadow made flesh: patient, precise, and impossibly fast. It parries blows with the faintest tilt of a blade, counters with a flurry of surgical cuts, and seems to read opponents’ intentions moments before they act. In battle it flows between guard and strike as if composing a silent poem of death — its two katanas singing in parallel, each edge finding gaps in armor and will. What makes it terrifying is not raw power but inevitability: foes who face it find that each escape, feint, and desperate maneuver simply fits into the Satori’s next calculated answer.

Multiattack. The Kagejin Satori makes three katana attacks or uses Iaijutsu Strike and then makes two katana attacks.
Katana. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (1d10+6) slashing damage. If the Kagejin Satori attacks with both katanas against the same target in the same turn, the second hit deals an additional 7 (2d6) slashing damage.
Iaijutsu Strike (Recharge 5-6). The Satori channels a moment of blinding speed and strikes a single foe. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (4d8+6) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 18 Strength or Dexterity saving throw (target's choice) or be knocked prone. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and is not knocked prone.
Ki Parry (Recharge 4-6). The Satori adopts a defensive posture. Until the end of its next turn, it gains a +4 bonus to AC and has resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks.
Deadly Rebuttal. When the Satori is hit by a melee attack, it can use its reaction to halve the attack’s damage and make one katana attack against the attacker.
Redirect. When a creature within 5 feet makes an attack against a target other than the Satori, it can impose disadvantage on that attack by moving 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Kagejin Satori are the product of centuries of monastic discipline twisted into martial perfection. Legends say they were first forged in the cliffside hermitages of the Hekken Expanse, where ascetics sought to transcend the self through bladework and austere meditation. Some Satori are restless spirits bound into flesh through ritual; others are living practitioners who have taken an unorthodox vow of silence and blade. Their houses are few and secretive, the most notorious being the Kurogane Cell, a reclusive order whose members train in isolation and send a single wanderer outward every decade. Scholars such as Master-Archivist Renok of High Isu have argued the Satori represent an idealized synthesis of body and combat technique: they refuse mundane attachments and value the blade as a path to clarity. They hunt where conflict becomes art — ruined temples, dueling grounds, and clans whose internal strife feeds the Satori’s need to measure themselves. Tales from the border city of Kul-Na tell of a Satori who accepted a noble’s duel, disarmed him without a scratch, and left a single horizontal scar across the man’s palm as penance. Despite stories of fanaticism, some adventurers have sought them out to test skill or to learn forbidden footwork — though many return with new scars and quieter hearts.
A Kagejin Satori is human-built but gaunt, with sinewy limbs honed by endless kata. They wear layered dark-grey robes cut short at the hips to allow quick footwork, sleeves narrow and reinforced with thin leather strips; beneath this, a shadow-stitched jacket glints like oil in low light. Their face is weathered but oddly placid, eyes narrowed and focused, hair cropped close or bound in a simple topknot. Each hand grips a slender katana: the tsuka wrapped in black cord, the tsuba plain iron, the blades long and slightly curved with a mirror-polished hamon. Scars lace their forearms and throat — relics of training — and a tattoo of a closed eye sits on the left palm. When posed, their stance is compact and economical: hips angled, weight balanced on the balls of the feet, katanas held at complementary levels so one edge guards while the other strikes.
