Lawful Evil
Vaelcor Hestyr
Soulbound Prince
An albino dark elf prince with skin like bleached ivory and eyes that burn like twin coals, Vaelcor moves with a courtly grace that belies the hunger at his core. His runed blade, Night-Thread, drinks the life of those it cleaves and feeds that stolen vitality into the prince — a slow, cold banquet of souls that leaves corpses sapped and hollow-eyed. Vaelcor is both sovereign and predator: he commands courtiers with a cultured smile and strips the spirit from a champion with a flick of his wrist, returning to the throne stronger each time a life is taken.

Multiattack. Vaelcor makes two attacks with Night-Thread.
Night-Thread. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d8+6) slashing damage plus 17 (5d6) necrotic damage. If the necrotic damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, Night-Thread devours the target's soul: Vaelcor regains 40 hit points and gains temporary hit points equal to half the target's hit point maximum (max 60).
Soulrend (Recharge 5-6). Vaelcor lashes out with a quick, spectral strike. Each creature in a 15-foot line that is struck by Night-Thread must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or take 27 (6d8) necrotic damage and have its movement halved until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and suffers no movement penalty. Vaelcor gains hit points equal to half the necrotic damage dealt to creatures that fail the save.
Commanding Presence. Vaelcor targets one creature he can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 minute. A charmed target obeys simple commands from Vaelcor and views him as a trusted superior. The target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. Creatures with an Intelligence of 3 or less are immune to this effect.
Parry. Vaelcor adds +5 to his AC against one melee attack that would hit him. To do so, he must see the attacker and use his reaction.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Quick Strike. Vaelcor makes one Night-Thread attack.
Shadow Step. Vaelcor teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space he can see that is in dim light or darkness. He can then make one Night-Thread attack as part of this action.
Consume Soul. If a creature within 30 feet died in the last round and its body is present, Vaelcor can spend this action to draw its lingering essence into Night-Thread. He regains 60 hit points and all creatures of the dead creature's type within 10 feet must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of Vaelcor for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns.
Vaelcor Hestyr was born to House Hestyr, one of the oldest lineages of the subterranean kingdom known in fragmented tomes as Surr'Keth. When Surr'Keth fell into civil ruin centuries ago, its nobles scattered; House Hestyr clung to one relic above all — the sword later named Night-Thread. Forged in a dead god's twilight, the blade first bonded to Vaelcor after he slew his elder brother in a duel of succession, and its hungers and his ambition braided together into a living tyranny. Legends told by the scholar Meruk of Halden (who wrote the Treatises on Soulwork) claim that Night-Thread is not merely a tool but a semi-sentient siphon tied to an ancient nether-plane called the Bleached Reach. Vaelcor has kept a shadowed court, the Obsidian Consulate, which seeks to reestablish Surr'Keth through grafting conquered populations into a subjected workforce whose souls fuel Vaelcor's power. Folklore in border hamlets speaks of a pale prince who will sit upon his throne and grow younger with every battle’s corpse; priests of the Lightguard of Berren lead holy patrols into ruined halls that still whisper his name.
Vaelcor is a tall, lithe dark elf (5'10"–6'2") with hair as white as bone cropped short at the nape. His skin is smooth, near-translucent ivory contrasted sharply by narrow eyes the color of raw garnet that seem to smolder from within. He wears close-fitting black leather layered beneath a sleeveless ceremonial breastpiece of hammered obsidian-steel engraved with faint, pale runes that pulse when Night-Thread drinks life. The sword Night-Thread is a straight-bladed longsword with an ashen-silver blade veined like dried riverbeds; where it has cut, the steel is glassy and absorbs light. The hilt is wrapped in dark, preserved leather and set with a single bloodstone. When the blade takes a soul, thin spectral wisps like pale cobwebs rise from the wound toward the blade and travel along a glowing seam that runs up Vaelcor’s forearm into his chest below the breastplate. His movements are measured and aristocratic; when he speaks, he tilts his head with a predator’s patience.
