Garrick Thornwell
Rooted Harbinger
Garrick Thornwell is a hulking, warped remnant of a modern soldier—ragged denim and a scorched hoodie half-buried beneath curling, bioluminescent blue ivy that erupts from his left palm and winds up his arm. In his right hand he grips a blackened, jury-rigged shotgun that fires with the guttural roar of both gunpowder and living root. His left hand has been fused with bark and knotwork roots that twitch like fingers; where blue ivy snakes over his skin it pulses with faint light and cold, and whispers of a distant city cling to the smell of oil and ozone. Facing Garrick, adventurers feel the uncanny pull of two worlds: anachronistic human defiance and a creeping, botanical intelligence that will claim everything in its path.

Multiattack. The Thornhand makes two attacks: one Rootlash or Shotgun Blast and one Ivy Rend. If Garrick uses both, the Ivy Rend is treated as a grapple attempt on a hit.
Shotgun Blast. Ranged Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target or all creatures in a 10-foot cone (Dex save DC 18 for half). Hit: 45 (10d8) piercing damage on a single target; or each creature in the cone takes 28 (6d8) piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Creatures that fail the save are battered backward 10 feet and knocked prone.
Ivy Rend. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8+6) slashing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 20). While grappled by the ivy, the target takes 10 (3d6) cold damage at the start of each of Garrick's turns and has its speed reduced to 0. Garrick can grapple up to two creatures at once with his ivy; freeing a grappled creature requires a successful Strength (Athletics) check against Garrick's grapple DC.
Rootlash. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (4d8+5) bludgeoning damage and the target must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be restrained by roots until the end of its next turn.
Darkness Bloom (Recharge 5-6). Garrick slams his rooted hand to the ground and the blue ivy erupts in a 30-foot radius. Each creature in the area must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 54 (12d8) necrotic damage, is blinded for 1 minute, and has visions of its home plane; a successful save halves the damage and negates blindness. While blinded by Darkness Bloom, a creature is compelled to move toward Garrick on its turns if it can, as the ivy whispers promises of return. Plant creatures and constructs are immune to this effect.
Anchor of Worlds (1/Day). Garrick plants his rooted hand and anchors a 60-foot-radius zone of warped twilight to the material fabric. For 1 minute, gravity within the zone is heavy and distorted: creatures of Garrick's choice in the zone have disadvantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws, spellcasters have their spell save DC reduced by 2 while they remain, and any teleportation or planar travel that begins, ends, or passes through the zone automatically fails. Garrick can end the effect early as a bonus action.
Reactive Thorns. When a creature hits Garrick with a melee attack, the attacker takes 9 (2d8) piercing damage as barbed roots lash out.
Parry (1/turn). Garrick adds +4 to his AC against one melee attack that would hit him. To do so he must see the attacker and be wielding his shotgun or have his ivy hand free.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Ivy Snap. Garrick makes one Ivy Rend attack.
Suppressing Shot. Garrick fires a single blast from his shotgun at a point he can see within 60 feet. Each creature in a 5-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must succeed on a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw or take 22 (5d8) piercing damage and be pushed 5 feet.
Rooted Step (cost 2). Garrick moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks and can end his movement by slamming his rooted hand; creatures within 10 feet must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and restrained by roots (escape DC 20).
Garrick Thornwell was once a human from the early twenty-first century—an urban militia volunteer who vanished during a blackout that tore open a seam between worlds. Cultists of the Order of Umbra, seeking to harness the primordial force they call Darkness, opened a gateway and dragged Garrick through. The Darkness did not simply transport him: it grafted foreign flora to his flesh and rewove his memories into a spliced madness. To local scholars like Marcellin Teth, he is the prime example of what the Darkness does when it tries to 'assimilate' an unfamiliar mind: it preserves the shell but floods the soul with alien purpose. Garrick now stalks ruined border towns near the Forswell Gate, a rift where travelers from other planes sometimes appear. He treats modern detritus—metal, leather jackets, and firearms—with reverence, integrating them into his new form. Local farmers tell of his presence by the telltale blue vine glow at dusk and by smashed barn doors blasted outward by shotgun pellets threaded with thorn and root. The ailing who worship the Order of Umbra see Garrick as both herald and tool, and occasionally sacrificial rites are offered to keep him tethered to their machinations. Yet even those cultists are wary: Garrick follows no human leader. He is guided by the whispering ivy and the hunger that Darkness taught him.
A towering human-shaped figure about 12–14 feet tall (huge, standing well over a doorway), Garrick keeps the rough silhouette of a soldier: broad shoulders, a hooded jacket (frayed denim visible under torn cloth), cargo pants, and heavy boots fused to earth and root. His right arm remains mostly human, scarred and stained with oil; that hand clutches a battered pump-action shotgun with duct tape, a scratched pry-bar stock, and a loop of braided ivy wrapped around the barrel. The left arm and hand have been transformed: the forearm is sheathed in dark, fissured bark; roots protrude like veins; knuckles are thickened into wooden nodules. From a central node in his left palm a tangle of glowing blue ivy grows—leaves resembling small, luminous hearts edged with black. The skin where plant and flesh meet is puckered and dotted with small root-hairs that burrow into bone. His face is human enough to identify as Garrick—stubble, a broken pair of modern sunglasses lodged in his hairline—but one eye gleams with the same cold blue as the ivy. Small modern tokens remain: a dog tag stamped with a civilian name and a smudged smartphone (screen cracked) hanging from a belt loop. The overall textures are a mix of rough fabric, rusted metal, wet earth, shiny glass, and polished bark; the blue ivy emits a faint cold light in dim spaces.
