Mavrath Vireo
Blighted Huntsman
Once a celebrated huntmaster, Mavrath returns as a living contradiction: a lean human warrior who wears ragged leathers and carries a soot-dark shotgun in one hand while a writhing column of blue ivy erupts from the other, roots corkscrewing up his forearm and embedding beneath the skin. He stalks like a predator that knows every trail and every weakness, laying ambushes with cruel precision and unleashing a living graft of plant and curse that clamps, poisons, and rends. Where he passes, soil blackens and the wind smells of iron and rain—an uncanny mix of battlefield and greenhouse.

Multiattack. Mavrath makes two attacks, choosing from his Scatterblast and Ivy Rend. He may instead use Rootbind once in place of one attack.
Scatterblast. Ranged Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 36 (6d8+6) piercing damage. If the target is within 10 feet of Mavrath, the blast deals an additional 14 (4d6) necrotic damage as the vine sap boils into the wound.
Ivy Rend. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8+6) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or have one limb entangled by roots (the target is restrained by the root until it or Mavrath uses an action to free it, or until the target succeeds on another DC 19 Strength check at the end of its turns).
Rootbind (Recharge 5-6). Mavrath slams his rooted hand to the ground and erupts a mass of blue vines in a 30-foot radius centered on him. Each creature of his choice in the area must make a DC 19 Strength saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) bludgeoning and necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. On a failed save, a target is also restrained as the vines curl about it for 1 minute. A restrained target can repeat the DC 19 Strength check at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Blooming Curse (Recharge 6). Mavrath lashes out psychically through the vine bond. One creature he can see within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be cursed for 1 minute. While cursed, when the creature takes damage, blue pollen bursts from its wounds and the creature takes an additional 14 (4d6) necrotic damage and sheds spores—any creature that ends its turn within 5 feet of the cursed creature must succeed on a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or be infected with blue ivy tendrils (as the restrained condition) until they succeed on a separate DC 19 Strength check.
Vine Reflex. When a creature misses Mavrath with a melee attack, he may use his reaction to make a single Ivy Rend attack against that creature.
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Ivy Snap. Mavrath makes a single Ivy Rend attack.
Step Like Roots. Mavrath moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks. If he ends this movement adjacent to a creature, he can make a single unarmed vine strike dealing 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage.
Thunder Scatter. Mavrath fires a short, concussive blast. One creature he can see within 60 feet must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (6d8) thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature failing the save is pushed 10 feet and knocked prone as the blast and lingering vines throw it off-balance.
Mavrath Vireo was for decades the captain of the Grey Sable Hunt, a guild tasked with tracking and culling beasts that threatened the lowland towns. An obsessive zeal to eradicate 'unnatural predators' led him to study forbidden rites and to bargain with an old wood-spirit twisted by pollution and blood. The spirit grafted itself to him as the Blue Vine: a parasitic, sentient ivy whose blossoms drip an ink-blue sap. The bargain granted him unnatural vigor and preternatural tracking, but corrupted his mind and body. Towns that once praised him now hide their children when Mavrath passes. Scholars differ on whether the vine is plant, spirit, or a fragment of a deep, fungal god. The scholar-peripatetic Anselm Tare has written the compendium 'Vireo's Blight', describing the vine's ability to anchor to flesh and manipulate root-like tendrils as both weapon and parasite. The Grey Sable Hunt splintered after Mavrath's transformation; a zealous faction known as the Scoured Collar still venerates him, believing the vine purges weakness. Those who oppose him form the Rootward Pact, an uneasy alliance of rangers and druids who have mapped the corridors and ambush routes Mavrath favors: abandoned canals, ruined glasshouses, and ash-choked forests where his blue ivy spreads like spilled ink.
Mavrath is a gaunt, middle-aged human roughly the size of an average man—about 6 feet tall. His hair is cropped short and flecked with grey; his eyes are pale and glassy, one rimmed with a faint blue stain where the vine's sap has run down his cheek. His left forearm and hand have been subsumed by a tangle of smooth, waxy blue vines and dark, fibrous roots that push through cracked skin, wrap knuckles, and terminate in thorned barbs. The vines pulse faintly with bioluminescent veins and bloom small, bell-shaped flowers that leak a viscous indigo fluid. He wears a patched hunting coat and oilskin trousers; the clothing is scorched and matted with dirt and plant husk. The shotgun is old but fearsomely modified—short-barreled, banded with iron bands engraved with nursery rhymes and arcane sigils, sling scars and root stains on the stock where the vine attempts to climb it. The overall feel should be gritty, anatomical, with visceral plant texture contrasting with human skin—wet roots pressing into flesh, shiny vine leaves, ragged leather, and a heavy, compact firearm.
