Matittal
Crimson Corvid
Matittal is a living nightmare of feather and shadow: a lithe, overpowered assassin that moves like a thought and strikes like a falling star. Clad in a mantle of dark-red and black raven feathers that ripple and coil as if alive, Matittal appears and vanishes in a gust of ash-scented air. It uses impossible agility, arcane trickery, and a rain of precise, agonizing strikes to dismantle foes before they know what hit them. Encounters with Matittal are remembered not as battles but as vanished friends and an empty pool of blood, with a hint of feathers drifting where the killer once stood.

Multiattack. Matittal makes three attacks: two Rapier strikes and one Shadowstrike. It can replace one attack with a dagger-throw called Featherbolt.
Rapier. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (1d8+9) piercing damage plus 24 (7d6) necrotic damage if Matittal has advantage on the attack (Sneak precision).
Shadowstrike. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (4d6+7) psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn as the shadow of Matittal's feather-mantle weighs on its senses.
Featherbolt. Ranged Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d6+9) piercing damage plus 28 (8d6) radiant damage. On a hit the target also takes 10 (3d6) necrotic damage at the start of its next turn as a featherseed burrows into its skin (removable with an action).
Sneak Precision (1/Turn). When Matittal hits a creature with a weapon attack and has advantage, it deals an extra 35 (10d6) poison damage as shards of enchanted raven-feather barbs tear into flesh. This damage is magical.
Arcane Cloak (Recharge 5-6). Matittal wraps itself in a writhing cloak of crimson-black feathers. Until the end of its next turn it has resistance to all damage, can move through occupied spaces as if they were difficult terrain, and any creature that makes a melee attack against it takes 13 (2d12) necrotic damage.
Featherstep. When a creature ends its turn within 10 feet of Matittal, Matittal can teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space it can see and make one Rapier attack against that creature.
Shadow Parry. When Matittal is hit by a melee attack, it can add +6 to its AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss (usable 3/day).
The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.
Quick Slip. Matittal moves up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Thorned Feather (cost 2). Matittal makes one Featherbolt attack.
Silent Echo (cost 3). Matittal uses Shadowstrike against one creature and forces all other creatures within 10 feet of that target to make a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of their next turn.
Legends say Matittal was not born but willed into being from the whispered maledictions of a forgotten thieves' guild known as the Sable Ledger. The Ledger sought a perfect agent: a blade that could think, charm, vanish, and carry magics in its breath. Countless arcane experiments stitched raven-feather sigils into a gifted assassin until something crossed the threshold between craft and life. Matittal escaped the Ledger's cellars and broke the guild's hold, leaving behind a single feather—dipped in blood and impossible to burn—as its calling card. Matittal favors ruined galleries, moonlit rooftops, and the crownless halls of city-states where power is distributed in coin and threat. It feeds on opulence and reputation: vaults emptied, reputations ruined, and political marriages collapsed are its trophies. Scholars such as Archivist Verun of Kestrel's Hollow and the hunter-monk order called the Iron Mantle have catalogued sightings; their records disagree on Matittal's motives, but all agree on one thing—avoid places where black-red feathers collect like confetti. The Iron Mantle now holds the rumored Feather Codex, a fragment of the ritual that birthed Matittal, and it whispers that if Matittal is ever bound again, something worse might be released in its place.
Matittal stands roughly as tall as a human rogue (about 5'10"), lithe and androgynous. Its skin is ashen; its eyes are pitted with iridescent black that catch light like oil. A crowning mantle of layered raven feathers—black at the tips bleeding into a deep, oxidized crimson at the quill—fans from the shoulders down the back and can flare to twice the body's apparent width. Feathers are oily, barbed, and cling to clothes and flesh; small arcane runes are inked along the shaft of several plumes. Limbs are long and sinewy: hands end in thin-fingered, dexterous talons that can fold into gloves. Clothing beneath the feathers is merged with shadow—tattered tailoring that seems woven of night—accented with thin silver filigree for pockets of enchanted lockpicks. When Matittal moves it leaves a faint smear of down on the ground and the scent of iron and smoke. For scale reference, depict Matittal beside a standard doorway (6'8") and a human adventurer kneeling to show the feather mantle's breadth. The overall texture should emphasize feather iridescence, oily gloss, and frayed fine leather.
