Carvenstem
Harvest Trickster
A squat, sentient pumpkin with a face crudely carved by its own growth, the Carvenstem grins with a permanent, seed-studded maw while long, sinuous vines slither like eager fingers. It lurks at field edges and abandoned gardens, using its reach to pinch and pull at unwary travelers or to steal lanterns and trinkets. Though hardy and slow, its grasping vines make it a surprisingly dangerous nuisance: a single timely pull can topple a hunter or drag a child out of sight before anyone notices the missing footsteps.

Multiattack. The Carvenstem makes two attacks: one Claw attack and one Vine Grasp attack.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6+1) slashing damage.
Vine Grasp. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d4+1) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 11). While grappled in this way, the target is pulled 5 feet toward the Carvenstem at the beginning of the Carvenstem's next turn. The Carvenstem can grapple only one creature at a time with a Vine Grasp.
Carvenstems are folk spirits made manifest in autumn fields and old kitchen gardens where attention — and offerings — have waned. Folktales say a neglected harvest, a whispered insult thrown at a pumpkin patch, or a botched jack-o'-lantern ritual is enough to seed one of these beings. They are not true undead or fey but a kind of animating hunger: a plant mind grown aware by human sorrow, superstition, and the tang of spilled cider. Villagers often treat Carvenstems as tricksters: mischievous thieves that prefer stealing lost buttons, ribbon, and small lanterns over taking life. However, cunning or desperate specimens will pull livestock through fence gaps and bind children in creeping vines for sport. The Cropwardens' Folk — a peasant guild that tends communal fields — keeps a crude calendar for Carvenstem activity and teaches children to leave small offerings of molasses and carved sunflower faces to distract one. Scholar Sima Renly of the Guild of Cropwardens wrote a short tract, "On Hollow Fruit and Folk," that catalogs several regional varieties and useful deterrents.
Imagine a squat pumpkin roughly the size of a small barrel, its rind mottled in streaks of orange, russet, and moldy green. Where a jack-o'-lantern's mouth would be, the rind is split into a jagged maw lined with dark seeds that glint like fingernails; two vertical slits above the maw serve as unblinking eyes recessed into fibrous flesh. From the pumpkin's crown sprouts a coiled, woody stem that splits into three to five flexible vines, each the thickness of a forearm and covered in tiny, hooked tendrils and coarse hairs that leave a charcoal smudge on anything they touch. The underside bears a shallow root-suction pad that lets it anchor to compact earth, and faint vein-like ridges run from stem to base giving the impression of contracted muscles under a leathery rind. Scaled to a human: a Carvenstem will come up to a crouching child's ribcage and can pull an adult off balance with its longest vine. Textures: dense, papery rind with fibrous interior showing where vines emerge; vine surfaces are ridged and slightly sticky with sap.
