Cinderling Gourd
Demonic Patch Sprite
Cinderling Gourds look like grinning pumpkins no larger than a child's head, but their eyes glow with inner ember and their green vines hiss like tongues of flame. They skitter across hard-packed soil on curling tendrils, hissing sparks as they swarm a lone traveler — then roar with a gout of flame that singes clothing and hair. Their laughter is a chorus of crackling leaves and distant bonfires, and the sight of a dozen of them clustered at the edge of a field can turn a peaceful night into a panicked scramble for water.

Multiattack. The creature makes two Vine Lash attacks.
Vine Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) bludgeoning damage and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength save or be pulled 5 feet closer and knocked prone.
Singe Breath (Recharge 5-6). The gourd exhales a cone of fire in a 10-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Cinderling Gourds are the warped offspring of ordinary field pumpkins touched by a single night of demonic storm. Farmers in the borderlands tell of a midnight thunder that fell over a cornfield called Gristfen Hollow; by dawn the patch had birthed dozens of small, sentient gourds that belched embers and ate straw hats. Scholars who study fiend-taint — most notably the binder Ravelin Hest from Kharion's Conservatory — believe the gourds result from a weak seam between the material plane and a minor fire node known locally as the Smolderroot. These creatures prefer to live where corn, pumpkins, and other field crops crowd together and the soil is warm from compost and old bonfires. Cinderlings hunt in small groups, gnawing at thatch and rooting up seeds to expose tender roots; they will swarm anything smaller than a goat and harass larger predators until those predators leave the patch. Farmers who survive an infestation usually burn the affected rows and salt the earth for several seasons. A superstitious cult called the Emberbinders reveres Cinderlings as omens and will sometimes steal them from patches to keep as living lanterns; the practice always ends badly when a gourd matures into a larger, more malevolent vine-creature.
Imagine a clutch of squat, squat-octagonal pumpkins, roughly 8–10 inches across, each with a lopsided carved smile and twin triangular eyes that flicker like coals. Their rind is pitted and cracked, mottled orange with blackened freckles as if lightly singed. From their base curl three to six thin, wiry vines that end in hooked tendrils, which the gourds use to pull themselves forward; some vines look charred where they trail sparks. The stems are short and knobby, often dribbling fine ash. Inside the carved mouths you can see a soft, interior glow and occasional tiny tongues of flame. Scale: each Cinderling Gourd is about the size of a human head and can sit comfortably on a farmer's palm; show them clustered among corn stalks and trampled soil, with a broken scarecrow nearby as environmental context.
