Mycogramm
Corpse-Puppeteer Fungus
A sodden, lichen-slick growth sprouting a tangle of pale tendrils and ink-dark sporopods, the Mycogramm anchors itself to a fallen adventurer and turns bone and sinew into a living marionette. Its host's eyes stare glassy while fungus-filaments braid into nerve clusters; the corpse lurches with uncanny, puppetlike precision as the Mycogramm directs it to guard the fungus, drag corpses back to its nest, or strike intruders with machine-like violence.

Multiattack. The Mycogramm makes two Tendril attacks.
Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 12).
Puppet Master (Recharge 5-6). The Mycogramm activates hyphae to control a nearby corpse within 5 feet. The corpse is animated for up to 1 minute as a puppet under the Mycogramm's control. Use the following puppet stat block: Armor Class 10, 11 HP (2d6+4), speed 20 ft., Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6+1) bludgeoning damage. The puppet uses the Mycogramm's initiative and acts immediately after it. If the puppet is reduced to 0 HP, the Mycogramm can't animate it again for 24 hours.
Spores of Binding (Recharge 6). The Mycogramm releases a cloud of fine spores in a 10-foot cone. Each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be restrained as fungal filaments cling to them. A restrained creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. The spores do not affect undead or constructs.
Mycogramms are small, unusually cunning fungal organisms that evolved in crypts and battlefields where corpses are plentiful. A single spore can remain dormant for months, waiting for the scent of blood and decay. When a fresh corpse is found, a Mycogramm sends ribbon-thin hyphae into the body's head and spine, knitting itself to nervous tissue and learning the simple motor patterns of the host. Over days it reconditions muscles to obey its chemical impulses, producing a puppet that obeys crude commands. Towns and grave-wardens near the fen-lands tell of whole squads of fallen pikemen dragged into shallow pits by unseen threads; the scholar Hest Oln of the Collegium Vireo wrote a small pamphlet, "On Corpse-Binders and Their Habits," describing Mycogramm colonies that collect trophies of helmets and coinpouches to attract scavengers. The hunters' guild of Varek Hollow keeps a ledger of suspected Mycogramm lairs; they are careful to burn the bodies and soil to prevent spore spread. Some funerary cults deliberately avoid certain crypts rumored to be 'braiding ground' for the fungus, while necromancers sometimes attempt to harvest Mycogramm fragments as cheap, untrustworthy puppetry components.
Imagine a squat, fleshy base the size of a medium barrel, mottled pale-gray and moss-green with wet, glossy sheen and a network of dark vein-like pores. From its crown unfurl dozens of translucent tendrils, each as thick as a pinky at the root and tapering to hairlike filaments tipped with pinhead sporopods. Small, ink-black pustules dot the sides and weep a viscous amber that smells faintly of iodine and wet soil. When attached to a corpse, several tendrils coil into the neck and temples, while others weave under clothing into joints; where hyphae pierce skin they leave a lacework of pale scarring and fungal bloom. Scale: the Mycogramm is roughly three-quarters the height and mass of a human waist-high barrel; its tendrils will reach across a human-sized bed and its base fits through a standard doorway. Textures: slick, rubbery main body, velvety inner pores, fibrous translucent tendrils with beadlike sporopods.
