Cantoriel
Choir-Bound Spirit
A Cantoriel is a chorus of ethereal voices braided around the pipes of a cathedral organ, a conscience and guardian made of harmonies. It manifests as a pale, translucent figure that seldom leaves its instrument, unleashing crystalline notes that wound the guilty and soothe the broken. The sound itself feels like fingers tracing along bone and memory — beautiful, insistently mournful, and impossibly old. When angered, its music becomes a battering wave of thunderous resonance that leaves listeners shaken and ringing with an otherworldly ache.

Multiattack. The Cantoriel makes two Resonant Touch attacks.
Resonant Touch. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) thunder damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll as ringing echoes unsettle its focus.
Sonic Dirge (Recharge 5-6). The Cantoriel releases a sweeping hymn in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 9 (2d8) thunder damage, is deafened for 1 minute, and is frightened until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and is not deafened or frightened.
Echo Shield. When the Cantoriel or the organ it inhabits is targeted by an attack, the Cantoriel can impose a -2 penalty to the attack roll (chosen before the roll is made) as a shimmering chord briefly distorts the attacker's aim. The Cantoriel can use this reaction a number of times equal to its Charisma modifier (minimum 1), regaining all uses after finishing a long rest.
Cantoriels are celestial spirits bound into pipe organs by ancient liturgies and vows. Monasteries and cathedrals once invited these choir-spirits to dwell within their instruments as perpetual worship and protection; in exchange, the Cantoriel bound itself to sing prayers and keep watch over the consecrated place. Over centuries, some Cantoriels became intertwined with the reputation of their churches: miracles and halting plagues were sometimes credited to a fervent dirge from the choir-bound organ. When churches fall to corruption or are abandoned, Cantoriels linger long after mortar cools. They catalogue the grief and devotion that passed through their pipes, replaying memories in sonorous visions for those who listen. The scholar Magister Orrel of the Hesperyn Archive wrote the earliest known treatise on bound choir-spirits, The Ledger of Aural Piety; Orrel warns that a Cantoriel can be coaxed into righteous fury by the desecration of its home and that the Brotherhood of Sundered Bells has attempted to harvest Cantoriels’ hymns for use as sonic wards. Few factions dare to steal a choir-spirit intact — it cries out like a congregation betrayed.
Visually, a Cantoriel resembles a tall, robed human silhouette woven from faintly glowing musical glyphs and curling staffs of notation. Its 'face' is an oval of drifting staves and notes that shimmer with each phrase; where hands would be are translucent tendrils of sound that ripple outward into thin wisps of air. When at rest it coils around an organ's pipes, with thin filaments of light snaking into the mouth of each rank. The surface texture reads like layered vellum: parchment-like, streaked with ink-dark veins that pulse when it sings. Scale: when standing beside a human clerk it is roughly the height of a robed organist; in art show it half-embracing a cathedral pipe, ribbons of notation trailing toward the floor.
