Kysirune

Tempest of Fortune

Kysirune is a towering, sinuous sea serpent said to twist the fates of ships with a flick of its tail. Wherever it rises the sky brightens with a strange greenish phosphorescence and sailors swear the dice in their pockets heat with possibility. It is worshiped as both a capricious patron — granting boons to those who gamble offerings and smiting those who break oaths — and a storm-bringer who commands currents and currents' luck alike. Encounters with Kysirune are dramatic: a massive head breaking the waves, scales glittering like coins, then a grin that feels like a coin toss with life and death on the line.

Actions

Multiattack. Kysirune makes three attacks: two Bite attacks and one Tail attack.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d10+7) piercing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8+6) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Tidal Fortune (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Spell Attack: +8 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d10+6) cold damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or suffer one of the following effects (Kysirune chooses): the target's next attack roll is made with disadvantage; the target's next saving throw is made with disadvantage; or the target has disadvantage on ability checks for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Luck's Wake (1/day). Kysirune exhales a shimmering spray in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 45 (10d8) radiant damage and is blinded until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half damage and is not blinded. Allies of Kysirune in the cone instead gain a boon: they immediately gain advantage on their next attack roll or ability check made before the end of their next turn.

Reactions

Fate's Reprieve. When Kysirune is hit by an attack, it can force the attack roll to be rerolled with disadvantage. If the rerolled attack misses, Kysirune regains 14 (4d6) hit points. This ability can be used 3 times, regaining all uses after a long rest.

Legendary actions

The creature can take 3 legendary actions per round, choosing from the options below.

Tail Sweep. Kysirune makes a Tail attack.

Breeze of Fortune (cost 2). Kysirune conjures a gust around one creature it can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or be pushed 15 feet and knocked prone; on a success the creature is pushed 5 feet instead. If the creature is an ally of Kysirune, it instead gains advantage on its next attack roll.

Twist of Chance (cost 3). Kysirune forces one creature it can see within 60 feet to reroll one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw (the creature uses the second roll). Kysirune chooses whether the reroll is taken with advantage or disadvantage.

Lore

Stories of Kysirune reach back to the early mariner codices of the Shifting Reaches. Some say it was born when a dying goddess of trade and a storm spirit collided over a thrown coin, their wills fused into a single temperamental deity that favors risk. Small island cults — the Braids of the Tied Coin — still leave copper offerings in nets and speak Kysirune's name before long voyages. Captains who placate it are said to find shoals part like curtains and wind always at their back. Kysirune does not demand temples so much as games: crews are invited to roll for favor, and fortunes won are reputed to be handed straight to the sea in the serpent's name. Scholars like Edrin Halv: a weatherbound chronicler from the harbor-school of Lyther's Horn — have cataloged patterns where Kysirune appears before sudden currents of trade or mysterious disappearances of cargo. Navies fear provoking it; merchants covet rumor of its blessing; pirates try, disastrously, to trap it for their own luck. Legends tell of a ruined lighthouse called the Coined Spire where a captain named Jorren Blythe tried to steal Kysirune's scale and drowned when all his crew's dice fell to snake-eyes.

Appearance

Kysirune is a colossal sea serpent, roughly the length of a galleon (60–80 feet visible when mostly surfaced), with an elongated head crowned by bioluminescent fronds that pulse like lanterns. Its scales are large, overlapping, and iridescent — when viewed at different angles they flash silver, green, and the deep blue of ocean depths, resembling scattered coins under water. A pair of slit-pupiled, predatory eyes sit forward on the head; a thin, expressive jawline suggests a grin rather than a mouth. Along its vertebral ridge run cartilage fins—thin, flexible plates marked with concentric ring patterns that glow faintly in moonlight. The underbelly is paler and smoother, streaked with barnacle scars and faint sigils sailors have carved into it over the years. Its tail is muscular, ending in a broad, fan-like fin capable of churning waves into whirlpools. The skin bears salt-encrusted textures and the occasional trailing kelp or fishhook, and its breath fogs with mist and the scent of wet coin. For scale reference, depict a human silhouette standing on a ship's bow roughly shoulder-high compared to the serpent's eye level when its head rises nearby.
