Three-Log Reckoning
the longhouse where axes sing
You duck beneath a low lintel into a high, smoke-streaked hall where the rafters smell of pine resin and hot iron. Massive benches and plank tables run the length of the room; boot prints, sawdust and bark cling to everything. A stone hearth dominates the center, flames licking a cast-iron spit and sending restless shadows over carved hunting trophies and hung chains of drying venison. Conversation is loud and brash: chopping jokes, wagers on the next log split, and bawdy shanties between gulps of froth. New faces are sized up by callused hands and close-set eyes, but a good drink and a strong laugh can buy a seat beside anyone.
A carved plank showing three interlocked logs and a falling axe; the paint is flaked, the axe head is embossed in dull bronze and the edge is streaked with sap

Fellfire Sling
5 spA hot mix of birch cider, a measure of spiced spirit and a toasted spruce skewer; it warms the chest and makes dull blades feel keen for an hour (gives advantage on one Strength (Athletics) check to split or lift heavy wood, then loses effect).

Gurn Stonehand is putting together a crew to prospect the Glintstone Vein, a sparkling seam beneath the south ridge that some say hums at night.
3
