Three-Finger Ledger

the ledger on a crooked street corner

A narrow, low-ceilinged room whose windows are perpetually half-shuttered; the air smells of damp cloak leather, overbrewed ale and fried onion oil. Lanterns gutter against the walls, throwing the long faces of patrons into hard shadow while a single ceiling fan of mismatched wooden slats limps along above. Voices are kept low but urgent; dice clatter on the scuffed boards and someone always has a finger tracing the ledger on the main table. Behind the bar, a line of peg-nots and bell jars holds pickled things and impossible-looking herbs, and the short hallway off to the side mutters of cots and the occasional muffled argument.

Over the door

A battered iron ledger clasp dangling from a rusted ring, one page permanently stained with ink and a thumbprint; the clasp squeaks when the wind moves it, no lettering, just the clasp and the stained page

The keeper

Mekru Ironhand

half-orc

Manner

Mekru runs the Three-Finger Ledger with pragmatic bluntness: business first, favors later if they feed the house. He tolerates noise and petty theft so long as it stays inside, and he'll bark orders like a drill sergeant when trouble starts.

Quirk

He habitually taps the same three fingers on the ledger's cover when he thinks, producing a tiny, nervous tune.

Stats

Use the Guard veteran variant: AC 15 (studded leather), Multiattack (spear + improvised crossbow), carries a concealed ledger of contacts and a dagger behind the bar
House special

Ledger's Burn

4 cp

A hot, peppered shot of house spirits mixed with lemon peel and a drop of smoky syrup; it numbs the tongue and steels the nerve — advantage on one Intimidation check in the next hour when consumed, but grants -1 to Stealth for the next hour from the scent.

Staff

Ibb the Porridge · cook

A squat human who burns everything to the same smoky perfection and insists his gruel will 'put teeth back in your head.'

Nim · barmaid

A quick-fingered halfling who smiles like she remembers everyone's debts and forgets to return change on purpose.

Grunt · bouncer

A hulking bugbear on a chain whose growl is the house alarm and who rarely intervenes unless coins are at stake.

Regulars

Tess of Two Cuts

A one-eyed dockworker who knows the schedules of every night barge and will sell a spot on it for the right bottle.

Old Marrek

A hunched ex-guard who claims to be retired but whispers about a sealed tannery vault and counts days until someone breaks it open.

Fenn Quickfingers

A grinning street-fence who fences small stolen things and is always looking to trade information for a cot and a mark.

Rumours
  1. 1

Old Marrek claims the sealed vault under the East Tannery contains a carved obsidian idol whose gaze can 'bless' a thief's hand — the council clerk Elias Brant signed the original claim paperwork.

  2. 2

A smuggler called Night Vane has been paying coin to anyone who can lift a small iron key from the ledgerkeeper's private shelf; the key opens a crate unloaded from the black-hulled barge 'Sable Wisp.'

  3. 3

The slum-collector Madame Kovo is hunting down a set of marked playing cards that were stolen in a back-alley job and were last seen traded to Fenn Quickfingers at the Ledger.

Look out for
The house ledger: a public communal book on the main table where patrons note debts and favors; Mekru enforces its entries, and signatures are binding.Dice pit under the raised board: a low-stakes gambling game run nightly where the loser sometimes pays in information or a small favor instead of coin.
