The Stitched Ledger

a basement dive under the tannery where fences meet thieves

You duck down a narrow stair between tanning pits and the stink of reagents, and the air cools to sour beer and mildew. The cellar is low-ceilinged, lit by guttering iron sconces and a single oil lamp behind the bar; benches are scarred with knife nicks and old blood. Men and women in patched coats keep to themselves over clay flags and a low counter—fences with ink-stained fingers, runners with wrapped-up hands, a watchman trading names for coin. A chain hangs from the ceiling where bales were once lowered; its links make a soft, metallic accompaniment to whispered bargains and the occasional barked laugh.

Over the door

A warped scrap of cured hide, hand-stitched to a slat of oak; a crude icon of a ledger and a patched coin purse are burned into the leather. The edges are singed and damp from cellar steam; no words, just the image.

The keeper

Brun Feld

Human

Manner

Brun runs the place like a ledger: measured, pragmatic, and uninterested in sentiment. He tolerates bargaining and petty theft so long as the books balance and no one brings a fight that bleeds into the tannery's day shift.

Quirk

He counts coins and stitches in the air when thinking, muttering numbered sums under his breath.

Stats

Use the Veteran stat block; AC 15 (studded leather), wields a sap hidden beneath the bar, knows local fences and two secret routes in the tannery cellar.
House special

Stag's Stitch

4 cp

A bitter, spiced ale that leaves a numbing warmth and a faint metallic aftertaste; drinkers gain advantage on Recall Knowledge checks about fences and stolen goods for 10 minutes but suffer -1 to Charisma checks while the numbing lasts.

Rumours
  1. 1

Haldor Venn, the tannery foreman, is collecting stamped hides marked with a stag — someone alleges he's hiding a ledger that records where stolen goods are fenced.

  2. 2

A merchant caravan out of Eastgate paid a secret fee to a courier named 'Grey Mott' for a crate labelled with the Stag symbol; the crate never reached its destination.

  3. 3

Sera 'Needles' Jow claims a watchman was found unconscious with a branded ring near the tannery steps; he babbled the name 'Ledger-Blood' before waking.

Look out for
A chained pulley and hook above the tables used to move bales; it can conceal or drop small crates (DC 12 Perception to notice loose pin).A hidden hatch in the floor behind the bar that opens to narrow tunnels leading under the tannery (requires a key or brute force to open).
