The Well of Spirits
the deep tavern beneath the city's sigh
A chill always follows you inside, as if the air has been drawn through old stone. Lantern light pools low and yellow; shadows gather just past the tables and seem reluctant to leave. The bar is built around a sealed well-mouth sunk in the floor, its iron grate black with years of spilled ale and ritual chalk; patrons lean close to whisper and listen. Conversations fall to hushed tones when the well lets out a soft creak or a distant splash, and the hearth's flames burn with an odd blue edge. The crowd is a mix: scholars buying a quiet table to study, sailors nursing slow drinks, an ex-soldier knitting his jaw as if the tavern keeps a tally of debts. Scent of rosemary, roasting meat, and a mineral dampness hangs beneath everything.
A wrought-iron well rim hangs above the door; dangling chains and a tarnished bronze cup swing in the draft. The metal is pitted with age and faint water stains trace down the sign; no lettering, only a carved spiral that suggests a drop into darkness.

Plummet
5 spA sharp blend of mineral water and warmed spiced wine poured over a sliver of blue-tinged ice from the well; it sobers the mind for a heartbeat and then loosens a secret—when someone drinks and spends a moment listening to the room, they gain advantage on one Insight check to detect a lie within the hour (the drink gives a faint ringing behind the ears).

1
Ghear the Ledger whispers that the drowned ledger lists a 'Count Varrek' as paying for midnight deliveries to the old bell tower.
2
Brenna says she heard scraping below the catacombs where a sealed vault bears the crest of the city watch—someone has been opening it on fog nights.
3
Captain Hollis claims his ship encountered a phantom vessel whose manifest included a crate stamped with the Well's spiral—a crate that never made it ashore.
