The Ledgered Drake
where debts are paid in coin and contracts
The Ledgered Drake squeezes into a crooked alley between a locksmith and a mapmaker, its low windows stained amber with candle smoke. Inside the air is warm with roasting meat and oiled leather; ink, lemon rind and rosemary cut through the tang of spilled ale. Light comes from iron sconces and dozens of glass bottles lined on a shelf, their contents flickering as if with a secret glow. A wooden counter scarred with notches and tally marks runs the length of the room; behind it rests a battered ledger, a row of labeled jars, and a pegboard hung with sealed slips of paper.
A weathered iron sign: a squat drake curled around a quill and a folded parchment; the edges are scorch-darkened, the quill's tip scratched through old ink stains, no words remain, only a tiny stamped seal in one corner

3
Old Tomas insists his brother, Tomas Verral, was seen limping toward the kiln entrance of the watchtower with a scorch-marked cloak and a brass talisman — someone in the Drake's ledger inked a dragon beside his name the night he vanished.
