The Gavel & Gallows
where verdicts are still read beneath a noose
The tavern occupies the courthouse's old courtroom: high, vaulted ceiling, a judge's bench converted into the bar, and rows of battered benches for common tables. Candlelight pools against tall windows streaked with the city's soot. The air smells of strong stew, spilled ale, and old paper; every sound echoes once, twice, then lingers as if awaiting reply. At the far end, above the bar, a shadowed noose hangs from a beam and, some nights, the carved visage of the former judge seems to turn toward newcomers — not moving, but asserting presence. Conversation is low and hesitant; the regulars speak in murmurs as if in court, and newcomers often find themselves clearing their throats as if answering summons.
A warped wooden gavel crossed with a crude gallows silhouette, paint flaking; the brass placard beneath the image reads only 'Sessions' in a halting hand.

Bailiff Joron swears the old prison beneath the courthouse still contains a sealed 'Archive Door' stamped with the judge's sigil; whoever opens it will find records that incriminate a city alderman.
2
A night watchman named Halwyn disappeared after arguing with a visiting magistrate; his watch (engraved with the same gallows mark) was pawned across the river and might be tracked down at the Ferryman's Market.

The judge's last written verdict was struck through and hidden in the binding of a lawbook kept at the Collegium of Records; Riven Thatch believes the amendment carries a ritual that lets the dead 'finish court' once more.
