The Moth & Anchor

the dockside haven for lost things

Salt, oil and old smoke hang thick in the low-ceilinged room; a lantern or two sputter behind a long warped bar, and the rest of the light comes from gaps in the shutters that frame the quay. Sailors with brine in their beards trade hush money and gossip beside baskets of sea-slick cargo. The air smells of frying fish, bitter hops and something sweet and musky that seems to cling to the barmaid's skirts. Bottled maps, smudged talismans and a battered chest sit beneath a stained tapestry of a ship; someone has scrawled names and debts in chalk along the beam above the fireplace. Newcomers are noticed, weighed, and either recruited as a hand, a mark, or a ward.

Over the door

A weathered oak board carved with a battered anchor overrun by a moth whose wings are inlaid with mother-of-pearl; the paint is flaking and a single wing is repaired with a scrap of bright cloth.

The keeper

Bram Dunlow

Human

Manner

Bram runs the bar like he runs a shifting manifest: blunt, distracted, and always a few moves behind what happens in his own house. He smiles easily but answers questions in measured half-sentences, deferring to others when trouble smells like coin or violence.

Quirk

Bram fingers a small iron key on a cord around his neck whenever a conversation turns to the docks or ledgers.

Stats

Use the Veteran stat block; AC 15 (studded leather), carries a hidden cudgel behind the bar and a keyring of brass keys beneath his counter.
House special

Moon-Tide

5 sp

A smoky rum and black-tea cordial Brinek mixes with a pinch of anise and a sliver of something that makes memories taste sweeter; it calms nerves and loosens tongues for an hour (advantage on Charisma checks to tell a simple truth or bluff, but the drinker is 1 level nearer to sleep if denied rest afterward).

Staff

Brinek · barmaid

A sharp-eyed human witch in a stained dress who pours drinks with one hand and slips charms into pockets with the other.

Hollin · cook

A broad-faced halfling who serves greasy, filling plates and grumbles that salt is the only honest seasoning left in the port.

Grim Thatch · bouncer

A scarred half-orc who settles disputes with a look and keeps one hand casually near the iron weight he calls 'advice'.

Regulars

Tamsin 'Knot'

A pale, clever urchin Brinek took in; she sweeps floors by day and reads names in Bram's ledger by night, searching for anyone who might be her real family.

Captain Rell Varn

A one-legged smuggler captain who pays in whispered routes and has scars that map a dozen port cities; he both fears and protects Brinek's trade.

Mirek the Mapmaker

A chain-smoking cartographer who trades false charts for secrets and is always hunting the next hidden cove Brinek's men are using.

Rumours
  1. 1

The skiff known as the Quiet Fox vanished off Old Pier three nights ago—Captain Rell Varn says Brinek hired a crew to lift a crate from its hold and swore Bram saw the marks.

  2. 2

A merchant named Harbin Mersk claims his ledger of black shipments was stolen; he’ll pay handsomely for recovery and suspects a 'mother' who launders children into crews—many fingers point at Brinek.

  3. 3

Tamsin Knot heard a whisper about a sealed cove called Hollow Sill where crates stashed by the Anchor Guild are unloaded; Mirek the Mapmaker might trade a map if someone finds him a missing compass.

Look out for
Carved mermaid handrail: hollowed sections along the bar rail hide small contraband and messages; staff know which knot hides which stash.Ledger board above the hearth: chalk names and debts can be quietly altered with a successful Sleight of Hand (DC 13) or read without notice by someone who knows the code (rumour links to the hidden ledger).
