The Quartered Coin
where a free drink costs you a limb and a name
A low, stinking room of smoke, salt and old oil; the ceiling hangs with fishing nets and stolen length of sail. Laughs and shouts roll like surf as sailors shoulder past rickety tables, coin cups clink and men swap crooked smiles. A hearthstones glow throws everyone into orange relief, but the rear keeps a shadowed hatch and a locked chest under the bar that draws the eye. Newcomers are watched from the second you step on the warped threshold; hands already hover near pockets and belts, and a server always arrives with 'a round on the house' before you can refuse.
A battered roundel carved with a coin split by a rope; paint flaking, one edge clamped with a real iron shackle. No words, just the symbol of halves.

Quartered Shilling
5 spA strong, sharp ale served in a chipped pewter cup with a sugared citrus peel; it warms the tongue and loosens tongues — drink two and you are 1 level more talkative for 10 minutes (advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) or Deception checks to get or give information, after the second drink the barkeep watches closer).
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Mave Kettle · cook
Serves tough stew and tougher advice, and keeps a hidden pocket of dried tea for sailors who cough up the truth.
Norrin "Grease" · barmaid
Animated and quick-fingered, she offers 'one for the road' with a wink — and pockets a lucky ring if your fingers are slow.
Huck Dole · bouncer
A broad-shouldered ex-pressed seaman who smiles like a hammer and remembers names like a ledger.
Old Rill Harp
A retired quartermaster who lost his son to a press; he wants the Iron Gull's manifest and will trade a sea yarn for any scrap of proof.
Tessin Mooks
A small-time smuggler who sells passage and information; she wants a missing crate at Harrow Docks and hears things for a price.
Bran the Mapmaker
A drunk cartographer who trades crude dock plans and alley shortcuts for ale, and swears he saw Lieutenant Carrow paying Bram last month.
1
Lieutenant Carrow of Harrow Docks keeps a private brig at the East Slip where pressed men from the Quartered Coin are held before shipment.
2
The Iron Gull disappeared three nights ago; Old Rill Harp says its manifest included a child of a dock worker and a sealed crate marked with a star-symbol.
3
Tessin Mooks claims a ledger listing men taken from this tavern was sold to a shipping agent named Marlowt of the Gilded Keel — find Marlowt and you might trace the route of the pressed.
