Ledger of the Beached
the smugglers' bar inside a whale's ribs
The place smells of brine, smoked fish, and the stubborn sweet of lamp oil. You duck under ribs the color of old bone to find a low, shadowed room: tables are planks laid across vertebrae, a battered brazier throws hungry light upward so the ribcage makes a ribbed, trembling ceiling. Conversation drops when strangers enter; boots on the sand-packed floor scuff in cadence with low laughter and the clink of secret coin. Someone is always counting—fingers drumming on a slate or a coin-purse—while a couple of men trade packages wrapped in oiled cloth in the darkest knot of the sternum. Sounds come in waves: a woman arguing over a map at the bar, a boy tuning a battered concertina, the slow creak of timbers where the whale's jaw meets the pier. There are places to hide under tables and carved niches behind the blubber racks; copper lanterns are shuttered at a moment's notice. New faces are watched like fish hauled by line—kept, for the most part, at arm's length until their story is told or their purse opened.
A bleached whale tooth lashed to a length of chain swings over the door; a smudged etching of a ledger and a crossed spyglass is carved into the tooth, edges darkened with tar and salt.

Squalid (5e lifestyle: about 1 sp a day)
Miri Nail · barmaid
She moves like a shadow through tables, remembers faces and debts, and slips notes into pockets for the right coin.
Huk the Knot · bouncer
A seafaring giant of a man who breaks up fights with a scowl and keeps a ledger of who owes what in his own thick script.
Bran 'Black Moor' Dren
A leather-faced smuggler who sells whispered routes and wants Seress Venn's lighthouse key back—willing to hire those who can lift it.
Tilda the Cutter
A wiry pickpocket who knows which crates at the quay are watched and which are cursed; she owes Gorrim half a watchman's wage.
Old Roun
A retired sailor who hums sea-chanties and claims the whale died bleeding a chestful of foreign coin—if anyone would listen, he'd point to a rusted iron chest beneath the sternum.
1
Seress Venn, the northern lighthouse keeper, has lost the iron horn key that opens the west harbor's sealed storehouse—she's offering coin and secrecy to anyone who will retrieve it.
2
A rust-streaked chest was shoved under the whale's sternum the night the ship 'Marrow Finch' disappeared; Old Roun insists it holds a map to a tide-hidden cove.
3
The harbourmaster, Deputy Kest, counts strange arrivals at sea on a ledger with a sigil matching the tooth over the door—he's been seen meeting with Bran Black Moor near the slipway after midnight.
