The Mudhook Ledger
where charts change hands beneath the tide
Built on rickety pilings over the muck of the low tidal flats, the Mudhook Ledger smells of brine, lamp oil, and the sour tang of unwashed bodies. Lanterns hung from a tangle of ropes cast twitching light across narrow boards; voices are low and urgent, interrupted by the occasional clink of coins or the slap of a chart rolled and passed under a cup. The floor beams creak with every stepping tide, and when the water draws back you can catch glimpses of half-buried stakes and the pale flash of something metal half-swallowed by mud. Inside, tables are narrow boarding crates; a long counter runs along the rear with a shallow window cut to the quay where sailors lean in to trade. The crowd is a mix of cutthroats, weathered skippers, and nervous clerks; many keep one hand near a dagger or a coin purse and eyes flick constantly to the rafters where charts and false-bottomed chests hang. Music is rare—only the scraping of chairs and the low negotiation tones—and when laughter erupts it is sharp and quick, like gulls fighting over a scrap.
A salt-bleached plank carved with a hooked mudrake clutching a rolled chart; the paint is flaking and the hook's eye has a smear of old tar, no words, just the crude symbol.

Old Luric · stablehand
A mute ex-sailor who tends the Ledger's flimsy moorings and ferries goods ashore on a battered punt; he speaks only in whistles and gestures.
Matey Jorren
A freckled map-seller who traffics in forged harbor plans and is always looking for an honest copy of Hemswell's chart.
Grem the Fingers
A locksmith-turned-pickpocket who launders stolen papers here; he wants a contact in the docks guard to sell a forged watchlist.
Haddie Quell
A midshipwoman in hiding who claims to have seen the merchant lighter sink and wants a crew to dive for its hull.
1
Captain Hemswell's codex: Matey Jorren says he saw an old codex once in Branok's vault that marks a silted channel and the wreck of a lighter holding papers that could topple Harbor Lord Carven.
2
The rusted sextant: Haddie Quell claims the drowned lighter's hold still contains a rusted sextant with a hidden compartment that points to a private ledger of smuggling drop points.
3
The midwatch ledger: Grem the Fingers whispers about a red-stamped ledger kept by a watch captain on the quay that lists nightly bribes; a copy is rumored to have been smuggled into the Ledger last tide.
