The Crooked Ledger
where debts are kept in ink and bone
The Crooked Ledger squats on the village lane like a bad decision made permanent. Inside, a single guttering chandelier casts thin bands of light; shadows crowd the rafters and the back booths. The air is thick with boiled cabbage and old ale, overlaid by the sour tang of spilled ink and the metallic whiff of coins; a tabletop dice game clacks in the corner while hushed voices trade names and prices. Locals sit with their collars up, speaking in clipped sentences; strangers are watched like unpaid tabs. A low counter runs the length of the room, scarred by knuckles and knife blades; behind it, a ledger chained to the bar and a stout chest draw the eyes — both attract more attention than simple hospitality. If you listen, you can hear the rustle of paper and the soft, practiced counting of money from somewhere near the back stairs.
A warped wooden tablet hangs askew, painted with a quill crossing a coin; the paint is flaking and the edges are chewed by weather. No words — the symbol is all the warning most travelers need.

Ledger's Comfort
5 spA double pour of ale warmed with a slug of black rum and a pinch of spiced root — it takes the edge off fear and makes secrets easier to tell. Drinkers gain advantage on a single Deception or Persuasion check within the next hour but suffer -1 to Wisdom saves until they sleep.

Mira Packrunner
A wiry courier who moves goods between villages and will trade information for a free cot or a favor.
Brother Hem
An ex-cleric turned hedge-priest who prays with one hand and picks pockets with the other; he wants redemption or a quick coin.
1
Marta's chained ledger lists payments from 'the Grinford Buyer' to Mayor Kervan — those deliveries pass through Grinford Mill and vanish into the marsh; someone wants the route stopped.
2
A sealed cistern beneath the crofter's lane (under the old linden tree) was opened last month and a soaked trunk full of foreign crates was pulled out; the buyer promised more, and they paid well.
3
The reeve's bastard son, Tiben, disappeared after a fight outside the Ledger; someone swore they saw him climb into a cart bound for the Grinford road with Old Joris's men.
