The Anvil and the Albatross

the harbor's hammer and wing

Salt and coal smoke hit you first, then the steady clank of metal on metal and slurred sea-shanties. The interior is low-ceilinged and timber-dark, rafters bolted with iron salvaged from wrecks; lanterns gutter but the hearth always burns hot enough to steam wet coats. Fishermen and deckhands press together on benches, trading bent harpoons, bawdy jokes and the occasional knife-swipe; nets, coils of rope and a pair of sea-stained boots hang from the ceiling near the bar. Behind the counter, a blackened iron-banded door leads to a narrow room where ship-timber and old anchors are stacked like memories.

Over the door

A weathered plank hangs from a rusted chain: a soot-stained iron anvil beneath the sweeping wings of a ghostly white albatross, the paint flaked and salt-streaked; barnacle growth clings to the lower edge.

The keeper

Garrick Hallow

Human

Manner

Garrick runs the Anvil like a foreman at the slipyard: brisk, brusque and fair with coin; he expects customers to earn their cheer and pays out in hard truth and a hard ale. He tolerates rowdiness so long as no blood is split on his floor — but cross him and he turns as quiet and cold as the tide.

Quirk

When unsure whether to trust someone he idly hammers a copper coin on the anvil outside until it rings true or dull.

Stats

Use the Sailor stat block; AC 12 (studded leather), wields a heavy iron hammer behind the bar, keeps a harpoon hidden under the ledger.

Staff

Junek · cook

A squat, tattooed man who fries salted cod and kettle-stews of muscle-building broth while shouting the day's gossip to the rafters.

Hellek · barmaid

Quick with a mug and a cheeky remark, she takes bets on who can down the most shots of Garrick's 'port-side bitter'.

Vorr · bouncer

A hulking ex-deckhand with a missing ear who settles disputes with a measured shove and a stare that remembers storms.

Regulars

Merrin Tidehand

A wiry fisherman who drinks heavily while nursing a bent harpoon and quietly asks after his brother's lost skiff every time a storm rolls in.

Old Griss

A scarred harpooner who swears he once shot an albatross that bled moonlight; he wants someone to help him find the cave where it crashed.

Nella Reed

A sharp-eyed trader who buys salvage and pays in favors; she is hunting a smuggler's ledger that vanished with a wrecked longboat.

Rumours
  1. 1

The fog-haunted brigantine Nightwing keeps circling the mouth of the bay at dawn; Old Griss claims its captain's name is carved on a bell lost in Garrick's bar.

  2. 2

A hidden smuggler's ledger with names and cliff-cache coordinates disappeared when a longboat smashed on Bluefane Shoal — Nella Reed will pay handsomely for its retrieval.

  3. 3

Merrin Tidehand insists his brother's skiff washed into a sea-cave beneath Grayspine Cliffs; he wants a party to dive the caves before the next gale seals the entrance.

Look out for
A bolted iron anvil on the porch used to straighten harpoons serves as an impromptu meeting point and makes a loud signal when struck.A low hearth and boiling cauldron that doubles as a creche for drying nets and warming soaked sailors — Garrick charges a mug-for-dry coat exchange (no money if you mend a net).
