Bargain in Ashes
the truce-house on the ash-strewn front
The doorway opens into a long, low hall carved into a slab of scorched rock that still exhales faint heat. Smoke hangs in slow eddies, lit by braziers of blue flame; conversations stop and resume like the shifting of ranks, because the room is split by an invisible line where treaties are honored. Soldiers and emissaries from opposite sides sit at the same tables, elbows almost touching, trading rations and threats in measured tones. Metal clinks, distant screams from the battlefield carry like wind, and the smell of charred meat and metal-sweet blood mixes with the bitter tang of ash-flavored ale. Every patron watches the doorway as if expecting a knife, an envoy, or a herald — and the barkeep watches them all more closely than any of them watch one another.
A scorched iron gong hangs over the door, rim cracked and blackened; a singed banner beneath it reads only a single word in Infernal and Celestial script — 'BARGAIN' — letters half-melted.
