Whisper Without Echo
the inn where guests forget themselves
The air inside feels slightly out of step with the world you left outside: sounds arrive a moment late and scents hang like thin veils. Candlelight pools across warped floorboards and a low, constant susurration brushes the rafters, as if the building listens. Patrons sit hunched over cups, faces pale and uncertain; whenever someone glances to the doorway their eyes shine briefly with recognition, then slide away as if a thought has been plucked clean. What you notice walking in are the small blank nameplates nailed to the beams and the little clay tokens on the bar, each etched with a sigil but no letters. The barkeep counts fingers, not coins; laughter is thin and occasionally interrupted by a hush where everyone seems to reach for something just beyond recall. The smell is stale ale, damp wool and a faint metallic tang like coins being counted under water.
A tarnished oval mirror plate hangs over the door, its reflective surface clouded with age; no words are engraved, only a single smudged handprint at the center and a hairline crack like a tiny lightning bolt.

Stats
Mneme's Draught
4 cpA cloudy, faintly silver ale that brightens a single memory for an hour—pleasant or painful—and leaves a small blankness where the recalled thought once was.
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Tegga · barmaid
A hollow-eyed halfling who refills cups with unsettling speed and speaks as if testing whether a word will stick.
Grun (the Gatekeeper) · bouncer
A broad, muttering half-orc who stands by the stairwell and asks every newcomer three questions they can never answer the same way twice.
One-Blank
A stooped wizard who refuses to give a name and searches the inn nightly for a lost grimoire he insists belonged to 'someone else'.
Cartwright Mara
A weathered human trader who leaves small carved cart models as payment and asks visitors if they've met a cart that rolls without a driver.
Kess of Three Fingers
A retired sailor with three missing fingers always offering a trade: a memory of the sea for a scrap of a name.
1
Archivist Keth of the Onyx Annex trades true names for shadow-ink; he was last seen in the Veiled Market holding a child's laughter in a jar.
2
Beneath the inn lies a sealed hatch called the Nameless Gate; Grun says its key was taken by a sailor named Jorren after a storm and is now aboard the ghost ship 'Thin Wake'.
3
There is a painted door in the north alley that opens only for someone who can recite their own true name; a map seller named Cartwright Mara swears it leads to a place called the Well of Unsaid.
