The Ninth Ledger
the inn where names go to sleep
A cold, lamplight hush falls the moment you cross the threshold. The air smells faintly of old paper, cold iron, and boiled barley; every surface gathers a thin, silvery dust that flakes when touched. Patrons sit at mismatched tables beneath low rafters, their faces washed pale by sickly lanterns, and each speaks with curious hesitance—names fall from their lips as common nouns or stories instead of use; no one seems able to say their own name. From the corner a clockwork-quiet bell rings now and then, as if to count something no one remembers. The inn feels like a place out of time: private grief is made public by the way people listen when you mention even a shard of a memory.
A soot-stained ledger bound in cracked black leather hangs by a rusted chain; the cover is blank except for a single shallow gouge shaped like a crescent, pages whisper when wind moves through the doorway.

Stats
Ledger's Whisper
1 spA sour, shadow-tinted ale steeped with a scrap of vellum; the drink dulls the immediate ache of forgotten names for an hour and sometimes returns a single associated memory (GM decides which), but leaves a faint gray mark across the drinker's palm.
Poor (5e lifestyle: about 2 sp a day)
Bram · barmaid
A lanky ex-scribe who pours ale with distracted grace and rearranges customers' cups into neat stacks according to how often they return.
Silek · cook
A quiet halfling whose stew tastes faintly of cedar and memory; she hums a counting tune while she ladles.
The One Who Once Owned a Farm
A grizzled person who tells stories of a field and a wife they cannot name and who will trade a map fragment for a single remembered crop.
Tobin the Pocket-Fixer
A nervous gnome who repairs clocks and keeps an odd brass pocketwatch—'the Orrin Watch'—that ticks without keeping time and which everyone avoids touching.
Sister of a Lost Invocation
A silent, robed figure who writes scraps of liturgy she cannot finish and seeks a priest who remembers 'Saint Korin'.
1
Tobin the Pocket-Fixer claims the Orrin Watch contains a slip of parchment with a name that once belonged to a captain of the Nightbridge—retrieve it and he'll bargain.
2
A wandering scholar named Vellin (last seen at the Crossing of Echoes) believes the Warden of Morrow keeps a ledger key made of moon-iron that can unlock a single name at the price of another.
3
In the drowned archive beneath the city, a sealed chest called the Echo Reliquary is said to replay a person's last spoken name if opened at midnight during a new moon.
