Vorrukoth

Bog-Scaled Black Dragon

Vorrukoth is a hulking black dragon whose scales seem to drink light and slime alike; it glides through fetid swamps with a sickle of a tail and hisses wet promises of acid. Its breath carves steaming scars across reed and bone, and its presence turns marshwater oily and still. Hunters speak of the way its yellow eyes track prey through the densest fog, and of voices carried by the bog that lure travelers toward sinking mud — the dragon's cunning makes its lair as dangerous as its jaws.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10+6) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) acid damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage.

Acid Breath (Recharge 5-6). The dragon exhales acid in a 60-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Lore

Vorrukoth is not a common wyrm but a denizen of the fetid lowlands known as the Marrekfen Bog. Local fishermen tell that Vorrukoth was born where a river of acidic runoff met ancient peatlands; alchemical poisons and stagnant magics fused with a broodwyrm, creating a dragon with an unnerving affinity for rot and chemical corrosion. It claims half-sunken ruins as perches and draws tribute from murk-dwelling lizardfolk and scavenger carrionbirds. Scholars disagree on whether Vorrukoth is a unique aberration or the progenitor of a small, localized bloodline. The Mirebind Cabal, a band of swamp witches, ritually sates the dragon in exchange for protection from rival tribes, while the expeditionary naturalist Ishnem of Vulyar documented Vorrukoth's habit of deliberately dumping alchemical waste to poison competing predators. Many maps mark a warning where the bog's surface looks like glass: that is often where Vorrukoth has stashed treasure beneath a thin crust of moss and oil.

Appearance

Vorrukoth measures roughly 30 feet from snout to tail tip, with a squat, muscular body built for pushing through muck rather than flight. Its scales are matte black and pitted, each edged in a slimy, iridescent film that gleams greenish under torchlight. The head is broad with multiple ridged nasal slits that constantly drip acidic mucus; its jaw is lined with jagged teeth stained brown. Eyes are a sallow yellow, narrow and lidless, with vertical pupils. Short, bony spines run along the neck and back, flattened to avoid catching brush. The wings are large but ragged, the membranes torn and webbed with algae and mud, giving it a ragged sail more useful for gliding over bog mists than true sustained flight. Its forelimbs end in three- clawed hands; the claws are blackened and often carry peat and small shells. Tail is long and whiplike, tipped with a bony knob perfect for striking into chest-high reeds and snapping exposed ribs. Overall texture: wet, pitted, and slick, with moss and encrusted muck embedded in crevices.
