Sootling Ember
Chimney Wyrm
A living wisp of chimney smoke and warm ember, the Sootling Ember is a compact dragon no larger than a housecat that unfurls from a swirl of soot. It smells of coal and singed wool, with eyes like polished coal that gleam with playful intelligence. Though often affectionate toward the sweeps who raised it, in the wrong company a Sootling Ember can choke a room in choking, oily smoke and snuff out lamps without warning, leaving soot-streaked walls and terrified servants in its wake.

Multiattack. The sootling makes two attacks: one Bite or Claw and one Ember Tip.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) slashing damage.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4+3) piercing damage.
Ember Tip. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d4+2) fire damage and the target is smeared with hot soot. A creature smeared with hot soot has disadvantage on its next Charisma (Performance) or Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check (DM's discretion to narrate) and sheds light as a torch until soot is cleaned or washed off.
Smothering Breath (Recharge 5-6). The sootling exhales a 15-foot cone of thick, oily smoke. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw, taking 10 (3d6) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. A creature that fails the save is also lightly suffocated: it has disadvantage on attacks and ability checks that require sight until it takes an action to clear its face or a round passes in clean air.
Sootling Embers are most often found in old cities with narrow streets and a culture of hearthcare. They are born when a hearth's smoke is fed a child's laugh and the lingering ash of a winter's vigil; tales say the smallest sparks of dragonkind can be coaxed into life by a chimney's hardships and the hands that tend it. Urban legends credit the Guild of Ashbinders—an association of sweeps, hearthkeepers, and repairers—with the first deliberate fostering of sootlings as pest controllers and companions in smoky tenements. Sootlings are known to form fiercely loyal bonds with the families that rear them, especially with those who teach them chimney routes and the names of hearths. Scholar Maerwyn Hessel of the Emberford Collegium catalogued their tendencies in a widely quoted tract, noting their fondness for warm laps, brass bells, and the soot-mark signatures sweeps leave in chimney corners. Rival scholars debate whether sootlings are true dragons or elemental fancies shaped by hearth-magic; the Guild of Ashbinders insists on calling them kin, and wards in several old townhouses still bear sootling glyphs to invite or bind them.
A Sootling Ember is roughly the size of a domestic cat (about 2–3 feet nose-to-tail). Its body appears half-solid: the underside is soft, dense soot that compresses like velvet; the back and wings are thin, rippling veils of smoke threaded with ember-red veins. The head is angular and avian-leaning, with a short, hooked snout and a fringe of bristly black soot whiskers. Eyes are glossy coal-black with pinprick points of orange that pulse when it is excited or agitated. Limb bones are faintly visible as darker streaks in the smoke, and tiny, soot-clad claws protrude from smoky paws. When it breathes, a faint column of warm, oily smoke issues from its nostrils; if threatened it can thicken this into a choking cloud. Textures should feel both soft and sooty: rough ash, warm glowing veins, translucent smoke-wings that catch light. Scale reference: show perched on a windowsill beside a human adult's forearm or curled in a chimney flue slightly taller than a human hand width.
