Kryssalith

Salt-Glass Drake

A young Kryssalith looks like a living shard of coastline: scales glinting like wet salt, barbed fins rimed with pale crystal, and a maw that sprays a grinding, glassy mist. Victims do not merely freeze — their skin pocks and hardens into pearly salt glass, joints seizing as veins of translucent mineral creep across flesh. The drake stalks tidal caves and salt flats, stalking prey until it can blast them with a brine-laden breath and finish them with jagged teeth that nick already-brittle flesh into glittering fragments.

Actions

Multiattack. The Kryssalith makes one Bite attack and one Claw attack.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (1d10+6) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8+6) slashing damage.

Brine Breath (Recharge 5-6). The Kryssalith exhales a briny, crystalline mist in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. A creature that fails the save is also coated in a thin film of salt crystals (Crystalline Strain). While affected by Crystalline Strain a creature has its speed reduced by 10 feet and has disadvantage on Strength and Dexterity checks and saving throws for 1 minute. If a creature gains Crystalline Strain a second time before the first instance ends, it becomes petrified for 1 minute. A successful saving throw removes the immediate strain effect but not any previous strain stacks.

Lore

Kryssalith are a little-studied offshoot of draconic life that evolved where ocean spray and mineral-rich winds meet sharp rock. Folk of the Brineward Watch tell of drakes hatched in caverns full of salt stalactites; as juveniles their breath carries a suspended slurry of salt and brine that deposits microscopic crystals on living tissue. Over hours this deposition grows, stiffening and cutting living cells until motion becomes grinding and slow. Coastal caravans learn to keep a small brazier of vinegar and oil nearby after a Kryssalith attack; the acids dissolve the worst of the crystalline film and free those who escaped full petrification. The naturalist Alen Vosh of the Marinarium of Vell documented a den of Kryssalith that fed on tide-stranded seals and, curiously, on the flensed hulks of wrecked ships—indeed, the drakes seem to prefer carcass fat to live meat when the salt film has already begun. Scholars from the Order of Glass Harbor debate whether Kryssalith are a mutated dragon species, a cursed brood, or a new draconic subspecies shaped by a particular salt-laden reef.

Appearance

A Kryssalith is about the size of a warhorse, roughly 18–20 feet from snout to tail tip. Its head is flattened, with a narrow elongated snout studded with sharp, glass-like teeth. Scales are small, overlapping plates that sparkle like wet salt—pale cream, bluish-white, and the occasional glint of iron-brown where crusted minerals stain them. Fins along its spine and cheeks have thin veins of crystalline growth like jagged sea glass. Its forelegs end in three clawed toes; its tail tapers to a blade edged in crystalline ridges. When it exhales its breath, a fine mist of brine and minute salt crystals glitters in the air and settles like a faint dust over nearby surfaces.
