Vorenspec

Symbiotic Eyelurker

A single, mobile eye that mimics harmless objects but seeks living flesh to cling to, the Vorenspec is a crawling orb of polished iris and writhing tendrils. It latches to a host and burrows partway into skin, seeing through their eyes and whispering urgent, impossible visions that erode focus and steal secrets. In combat it prefers to attach and sap its victim's attention rather than outright destroy them, turning allies into unwilling spies or paranoid, stumbling puppets.

Actions

Multiattack. The Vorenspec makes two attacks: one Bite and one Attach attempt.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) piercing damage.

Attach. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4+3) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 12). While grappled in this way, the Vorenspec is attached to the target. An attached target takes 3 (1d6) psychic damage at the start of each of its turns, has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight, and the Vorenspec can see through the host's eyes. The host can use an Action to attempt a Strength (Athletics) check or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check against the escape DC to remove the creature; dealing 5 slashing damage to the Vorenspec also severs its hold. The Vorenspec can detach as a free action.

Swaying Visage (Recharge 5-6). The Vorenspec fixes its gaze on one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 minute, during which time it is incapacitated and has a sense of urgent focal hallucinations, seeing faint images and whispers urging it to stare or move closer to the Vorenspec. A charmed target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. If the saving throw is made, the target is stunned until the end of its next turn.

Lore

Vorenspecs are believed to be offshoots of deeper aberrant ecologies—eyes shed by larger, nameless things that dwell in cavernous rifts beneath old cities. Folk tales tell of the Vorenspec as "the bargain-eye": a coin-sized pupil offered as a boon to lonely watchmen, only to seize their sight and make them keep watch for centuries. The Kalesh Institute of Occult Anatomy holds a preserved specimen under glass, its iris still tracking visitors with malice. Hunters of strange parasites, such as the guild called the Gutter-Scriveners, have found Vorenspecs in the nests of roof-dwelling scavengers and within the beards of sailors. Scholars like Mirdan Veyr argue Vorenspecs evolved to hitch rides on intelligent species to gain access to food, secrets, and shelter; priests of the small temple at Corren's Gate consider them omens, and at least one folktale tells of a whole watchtower that fell into madness after a cluster of Vorenspecs colonized its sentries.

Appearance

A Vorenspec is roughly the size of a closed fist (about 4 inches across). The central feature is a glossy, vertical-slit iris rimmed with ridged sclera that glints like wet glass. Around the eye's base are six to eight short, fleshy tendrils, each tipped with tiny hooks and a flat suction pad. The tendrils are mottled grey and green, with a slick, slightly translucent membrane where they join the eye. When inactive the creature mimics objects: folding over like a dull brooch, flattening to resemble a pebble, or curling into the hollow of a button. When it moves, the iris dilates and concentric lashes—short, cartilage-like filaments—snap outward, revealing a ring of faint bioluminescent veins beneath the skin. Texture should read as wet and tactile; the surface is glossy and slightly veined, with fine hair-like cilia around the tendrils. Show a human hand beside it for scale and a wooden doorway in the background to suggest urban roofing or alley lairs.
