Thalassilque

Tide-Pool Caller

A thalassilque lurks in sun-bleached rock pools, a wet, lidded thing that presses a collage of cracked, singing shells to its throat. It speaks only through the voices trapped in those shells — the last frantic words of drowned sailors, gull cries, and the hollow cadence of harbor bells — weaving them into coaxing calls. Adventurers who follow those familiar voices often find themselves stepping onto slippery stones, held fast by unseen limbs as the tide-pool thing draws them closer to its maw.

Actions

Multiattack. The thalassilque makes two Grasping Limb attacks.

Grasping Limb. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 12). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained by the thalassilque's slimy tendrils. The thalassilque has two tendrils; it can grapple a number of creatures up to that number.

Mimicked Entreaty. The thalassilque throws its shell-plates open and speaks through a borrowed voice. Each creature of the thalassilque's choice that can hear it within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 minute. While charmed in this way, a creature is incapacitated and moves toward the thalassilque by the safest available route on each of its turns, stopping if it takes any damage. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. Once the thalassilque uses this action, it can't use it again until it finishes a short or long rest.

Lore

Thalassilques are aberrations born of long exposure to storm-lashed coasts where the boundary between sea and land thins. Old fisherfolk claim these creatures emerge from pools that form where ships have broken; the thalassilque seems to collect the voices of the drowned, weaving them into living shells that it wears to beguile prey. Some scholars argue they are a byproduct of a sea-spawned madness, a kind of memetic parasite that latches onto the last echoes of human speech. Coastal communities have names for the places thalassilques favor. The coves near Gullbarrow Point and the ruined piers of Kerran's Reach are often scoured at low tide by small bands of local guards to flush out tide-pool callers before they can lure fishermen. The marine antiquarian Archivist Meros of the Thaleline Library kept a brittle ledger of thalassilque-baiting techniques; his entries describe using dull, steady drums and the fragrance of fresh fish to drown the worn voices, allowing the hunters to approach. Rumor holds a reclusive troupe known as the Saltbinders cages a thalassilque for use in their maritime ambushes, harnessing its mimicry to lure rival crews onto hidden rocks.

Appearance

A thalassilque is the size of a large dog, its torso a sodden, rubbery mass mottled in barnacle-white, kelp-green, and peeling shell-patina. Where a face might be, a ring of thin, overlapping shell-plates frames a wet aperture; each plate holds a tiny, fossil-like mouth that can whisper. Its limbs are six sinuous, fingered tendrils like blanched seaweed, tipped with suction pads and ragged nails that gleam like old brass. Strands of hair-like anemone tissue cascade from its shoulders and spine, flicking with the motion of the water. When it mimics, thin shells embedded in its throat thrum and ring; the shells are often fragments of sailors' baubles — rosaries, nameplates, and engraved coins — and they glow faintly when a voice stirs within. Overall texture: slick epidermis, cracked shell edges, slimy sea-scented residue, about two-thirds the height of a standing human when coiled on a rock.
