Campanophage
Lantern-Jawed Watcher
A Campanophage is a grotesque sentinel folded from bell-metal and shadow: a thin, gangly torso hung beneath a hollow, lantern-like jaw that rings with otherworldly tones. It haunts ruined belfries, clinging to rafters and peering through shattered louvers with a single, lidless ocular membrane. When it tolls its jaw the sound crawls under a listener's skin—some hear distant choirs, others feel a cold tally of their sins—leaving victims stunned, ringing in their ears, and trembling with irrational fear.

Multiattack. The Campanophage makes two Jaw strikes.
Jaw. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+1) bludgeoning damage, and the target takes 3 (1d6) thunder damage as the jaw clangs against them.
Eerie Toll (Recharge 5-6). The Campanophage slams its lantern-jaw and releases a resonant toll in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or take 7 (2d6) psychic damage, be deafened for 1 minute, and be frightened of the Campanophage for 1 minute. A frightened or deafened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Campanophages are thought to be the remnant intelligences of bells once consecrated to gods of watchfulness or to communal rites. When a bell is broken, stolen, or left to rust in neglect, some portion of its purpose can coalesce into a creature at the tower's apex. These beings latch onto the tower's resonance: they feed on the attention of passersby, the vibrations of footsteps, and the toll of distant storms. Over decades a single tower may gather a small brood, each inhabiting its own niche among the timbers. Scholars such as Magister Orthen of the Archive of Hollow Sound record that Campanophages keep an obsessive tally of time and sound; they will relentlessly re-create a bell's last clear toll and punish intruders who interrupt the pattern. They are known to hive around ruined bell-houses like those at Grivsill Tower and the drowned steeple of Merek Vale. Local watch guilds sometimes leave unwitting offerings—broken clockwork, coins, or a scrap of ribbon—to distract a Campanophage and spare the living its cursed tolling.
A Campanophage stands roughly as tall as a hunched human, lean and angular, its limbs composed of dark, pitted metal like aged bell-bronze, veined with filaments of blackened tendon. Its head is a hollow, lantern-shaped maw rimmed with serrated, thin metal teeth that chime when they move; within the lantern-jaw a faint, oily glow pulses in time with its murmured counts. One large, lidless ocular membrane sits in the chest, milky and reflective, rimmed by a ring of dented clappers and rivets. Long, spidery fingers end in blunt cones used for clinging to beams; its shoulders are bridged by a semi-circular yoke that echoes the curve of a bell. Surface textures: hammered metal, rust-stained crevices, stretched leather ligaments, and soot in the joints. Scale: about as tall as an average human (stand beside a narrow belfry doorway), often seen amid broken ropes, shattered clappers, and corroded bell chains.
