Viskeri Coil

Tetrarch of Twin-Mouthed Serpents

A writhing cluster of four double-headed snakes, the Viskeri Coil moves as a single, disturbing organism: heads lunge independently while the braided bodies twist in perfect, predatory choreography. Each head studies prey with cold, glassy eyes and opens to reveal forked tongues and needle teeth; when the Coil strikes, it seems to attack from every angle at once, leaving victims unnerved and often entangled in trailing bodies as they try to flee.

Actions

Multiattack. The Viskeri Coil makes two Bite attacks, each with a different head. It can target the same creature or different creatures.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+3) piercing damage.

Tangled Recoil (Recharge 5-6). The Coil lashes out with its trailing bodies. Each creature within 10 feet must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be restrained as the Coil's bodies wrap around limbs. A creature restrained by Tangled Recoil can use an action to make a Strength check against DC 13 to free itself. The Coil can have up to two creatures restrained at once by this trait.

Reactions

Split Strike. When a creature misses the Coil with a melee attack, one of the Coil's free heads snaps in a reflexive bite at the attacker with advantage. If it hits, the attack deals normal damage.

Lore

Viskeri Coils are creatures born in the drowned reedbeds and limestone fissures where water and stone meet. Folk in the Bleached Marshes claim a Coil is formed when a nest of identical snakes is fused by some strange mineral efflorescence, but scholars suspect a parasitic embryonic fungus or a rare mutation in serpentine development. The first written account appears in an explorer's ledger from the caravans that crossed the White Mire, where a caravan guard described 'four snakes, each with twin mouths, moving like a single rope.' While solitary, a Viskeri Coil is territorial and opportunistic, hunting frogs, birds, and small mammals; it will also scavenge carrion. Coils are feared by hunters because their multiple heads make conventional approaches hazardous and confusing. The naturalist Archivist Vorun of Seath wrote a short treatise on them after losing an apprentice to one; his notes describe the creature's curious taste for carrion soaked in mineral salts, suggesting a link to the Coil's alleged origin. Local cults sometimes revere them as omens of doubled fortune or doubled ruin, and the moss-priests of M'reth keep talismans around wells to 'avoid being two-byted.'

Appearance

Imagine four slender serpents braided into a compact, looping cluster roughly as wide as a human's torso and as long as an arm when uncoiled. Each serpent has a satin-smooth, scaleless hide that reads like pale limestone: faint, irregular cross-hatching of grey tones with tiny ridges along the spine. Each of the four bodies splits at the neck into two thin, angular heads — two heads mirror each other on a single neck, with narrow jaws, exposed needle teeth, and small, lidless eyes set at slight angles. The coils taper to whip-like tails that flick with nervous energy. There are faint mineral encrustations around the bases of the necks — tiny crystalline nodules that catch light like salt — and the undersides are slightly translucent, showing dark, coiling organs when held up to light. Scale for an artist: the whole creature compacted sits on a human forearm (about 18–24 inches across when coiled), or it can stretch in a line up to the height of a crouching person when hunting.
