Marrusk
Shallowwater Lurker
The Marrusk is a lean, eel-like ambusher that haunts tidal flats and kelp-choked coves. It waits just beneath ankle-deep surf, its mottled hide rippling with seaweed and sand, then lashes out with hooked claws and a needle-toothed maw to drag unwary fishermen into the water. Its attacks are clinical and relentless; survivors tell of a cold, whispering pressure on the legs before the world is yanked sideways into murky shallows.

Multiattack. The Marrusk makes two Claw attacks.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+3) slashing damage.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d4+3) piercing damage. If the target is grappling the Marrusk or is grappled by it, the target has disadvantage on the attack roll.
Tide Pull. When a creature the Marrusk can see enters shallow water within 5 feet of it, the Marrusk can make one Claw attack against that creature as a reaction.
Fishermen along the Kessir Shoals have long traded tall tales about the Marrusk, blaming it for missing nets and the occasional gutted skiff. The creature is not a deep-sea terror but a specialist of the littoral zone—its entire life cycle is tied to tides, eelgrass beds, and shoreline inlets. Marrusk rarely venture into deeper water, fearing larger predators and waves; they instead exploit the predictable rhythm of low tide to ambush small boats, waders, and crabbers. Scholars at the Tempest Archive—most notably the naturalist Dael Morven—believe Marrusk populations swell where overfishing leaves carrion strewn along the shore, and where reed beds have been cleared, creating easy avenues for them to approach. Coastal communities have superstitions and crude rituals to ward the shore, and the Tidewardmen guardposts keep watch in high-traffic coves, but Marrusk are cunning enough to learn patterns, waiting until slack tides and drunken fishermen provide the best opportunity. Old net fragments and carved tokens from drowned sailors are sometimes found woven into their kelp-patterned crests, a grim sign of what they collect.
A Marrusk measures roughly 4–5 feet long from snout to tail and is as wide as a stout thigh. Its body is compressed laterally, like a flattened eel, with three sweeping dorsal frills edged in filmy tissue that resemble torn seaweed. Skin texture is slick and leathery, mottled green-gray with rust-brown streaks that pick up algae and sand; barnacles and limpets sometimes colonize older individuals. The head is narrow, with a crescent of backward-pointing needle teeth and pale, pupil-less eyes set high and forward for surface scanning. Each forelimb ends in three hooked, bony claws that can fold against the body; these claws show wear and nicks from cutting ropes and netting. A faint bioluminescent strip runs along the underside near the tail, visible as a dull shimmer in twilight. For scale, depict it lunging at a barefooted fisherman wading knee-deep—the Marrusk's head and hooked forelimbs emerging from shallow water, spray and kelp trailing from its body.
