Kerrunax
Bridge Tollkeeper
A squat, shell-backed crab the size of a dire dog that perches astride a bridge like a living tollbooth, Kerrunax extorts travelers with a combination of brutish clamps and a peculiar, uncanny stare. It slaps its claws on the stone, chittering in a quick, gutteral rhythm that sounds almost like counting coins; those who refuse its fee find the crossing suddenly treacherous as the creature lashes out, grabbing packs, severing ropes, or simply refusing to move until the debt is paid. Kerrunax is as much a nuisance as a predator: it will take coin, food, or favors — and will remember insults.

Multiattack. The Kerrunax makes two Claw attacks.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) slashing damage.
Demand Toll. The Kerrunax raises a claw and issues a harsh clicking clamor. One creature of the Kerrunax's choice within 30 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be Frightened of the Kerrunax until the end of the Kerrunax's next turn and feel compelled to hand over any coin or small valuables it is carrying. A creature that fails the save and has no coin or valuables is still Frightened until it pays or succeeds on another Wisdom save at the end of each of its turns. Paying a small amount (typically 1 gp or appropriate equivalent) ends the effect immediately. The saving throw DC is 11.
Kerrunax are born from the accidents of trade routes: a drowned cart, a collapsed pier, a bargain with a river witch. Fishermen tell of a tide-swept shell that crawled onto a ruined causeway and refused to leave. Within a season it had learned the rhythm of the road and the value of passage. Merchants who pass the same spans every market day whisper of tolls collected by a creature that does not barter for coin alone; some swear it demands promises or names instead. Scholars such as Archivist Meros of Halbeth have catalogued Kerrunax sightings and surmise that the creatures form loose dominions along chokepoints — bridges, causeways, ruined aqueducts — sometimes signing informal treaties with local brigands or ferrymen. The Guild of Wayfarers keeps an old ledger of offerings that once placated an unusually voracious Kerrunax near Stonebarrow. Even when slain, a Kerrunax's clutch of eggs is often guarded by wary crows or crabs, and local children will sometimes pocket a small crab claw as a charm against tolls.
Kerrunax looks like a cross between a thalassic crab and a squat guardian statue. Its carapace is pitted riverstone gray with streaks of green algae and iron-red rust where metal has spent long seasons against it. The shell is flattened and nearly rectangular, broad enough to block a narrow bridge; shallow grooves along its edges resemble ledger marks, like the scars of old ropes. Two powerful, serrated claws sprout from thick, muscled arms mounted low on its thorax. Its face is a narrow beak beneath two lidless, glossy eyes rimmed in pale barnacle flesh; a fringe of sensory barbels surrounds its mouth. Its underside is softer, webbed, and stained by years of soot and coin. When stationary it tucks its legs beneath the edge of its shell so only claw tips and a few wiry legs show, making the creature look like an oddly shaped rock until it shuffles forward.
