Virelth

Shrinebound Sylvan

Virelth is a woodland spirit bound to the dying heart of a forgotten forest god; she moves like wind through leaves and smells of damp moss and crushed pine. Where she treads, saplings lean and old roots whisper. Her presence is gentle and mournful — a protector of sap and stone who will charm or mislead intruders rather than slay them, but when the wood-god’s last rites are threatened Virelth’s sorrow hardens into a terrible, persistent resolve that can trap and peel flesh from bone with thorn and vine.

Actions

Multiattack. The Virelth makes two Staff strikes or one Staff strike and uses Thornbind.

Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) bludgeoning damage.

Thornbind (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 30 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6+2) piercing damage, and the target is entwined by writhing roots and vines. The target is restrained (escape DC 12). A creature restrained by Thornbind can use an Action to make a Strength check against the escape DC, freeing itself on a success. If the target takes 4 or more slashing damage while restrained, the roots loosen and the condition ends.

Reactions

Wiltward Step. When a creature the Virelth can see within 30 feet damages a tree, shrub, or other plant (DM adjudicates), she can use her reaction to teleport to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of that plant and cause the nearest exposed roots to lash out, dealing 4 (1d8) bludgeoning damage to the offending creature (no save).

Lore

Virelth was born when a minor woodland deity, known simply as the Hollowfather, dwindled to a single, weeping shrine in a hollowed grove. The god’s power did not vanish but condensed into a ring of sacred oaks; a single fey child grew from the root-tangled soil to tend that last spark. Over generations, villagers called her a guardian, hunters left offerings, and a handful of hedge-scholars whispered her name in grimoires as a ward against blight. As the Hollowfather’s worship waned and the grove’s power shrank, Virelth adapted: she learned to weave the last, thin magics of the god into cunning protections, charms, and the occasional desperate assault. The Order of Stonebloom — a small, secretive covenant of ruin-sages and tree-priests — keeps a battered journal of encounters. They claim Virelth will bargain memories for favors and that her grief can be assuaged by restoring a fragment of the old rites. Where the grove is entirely cut or blackened, however, Virelth becomes a bitter sentinel, luring trespassers into root-traps and letting them become compost for the shrine she cannot save.

Appearance

Virelth looks like a lithe young woman growing from the earth: her skin has the pale, striated tone of birch bark, hair spilling in tangled, moss-dark locks threaded with seedlings, leaf-brooches, and brittle lichen. Her eyes are the glassy green of pooled water; faint, pulsing veins of sap run under her arms and across the hollows of her collarbone. Vines loop around her wrists and ankles like living jewelry, and small thorns glitter along her forearms. Her limbs are slightly elongated and jointed like a faun’s, enabling graceful, uncanny movement through branches. Scale reference: roughly the height of a human woman (about 5'6"), often illustrated standing beside a gnarled oak root or stepping through a shallow forest doorway, with thin roots trailing from her feet into the leaf litter.
