Glimmerkin
Beaconling of the Greenwood
A Glimmerkin looks like a fist-sized, pulsing globe of pale lantern-light cradled in a nest of translucent tendrils. Where common will-o'-wisps lure travelers to bog and ruin, Glimmerkin flit near hedgerows and along lane-stones, their glow warm and coaxing; their presence turns cold fear into hopeful curiosity. They haunt crossroad groves and cottage windows on fog-thick nights, slipping into the shadows behind lost children and guiding them home with a tireless, uncanny patience.

Guiding Glow (Recharge 5-6). The Glimmerkin sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. While the light is active, any willing humanoid child (age 12 or younger) that starts its turn within 5 feet of the Glimmerkin gains the effects of the spell calm emotions with a saving throw DC 12 (Wisdom) to resist. If the child fails, the Glimmerkin is a trusted and calming presence for 1 hour and will follow the Glimmerkin's gentle movements, accepting guidance back toward safe places. The effect ends early if the child is commanded to harm another creature or if the Glimmerkin leaves the creature's sight for more than 1 minute.
Glimmerkin are fey spirits born where the wildwood meets human settlement: the place a lane crosses a stream, a hedgerow is trimmed for the hundredth year, or an abandoned cottage has been quietly kept by a single lantern. Old tales claim they are the residual kindness of a thousand goodbyes, animating stray lights to preserve the safety of small, wandering things. They are less common in deep, old forests and more frequent in fringe habitats—commons, orchards, and village edges—where children might wander at dusk. Villagers tell of the Wardens of Brindlefen, a loose band of night-watchers and retired rangers who leave small tokens (a ribbon, a carved pebble) at hedges to attract friendly Glimmerkin in winter; those who heed the token find a light to their door. Scholars such as Elidor Venn of the Greyleaf Archives record that Glimmerkin will not lead a child toward harm by design—if asked to do so by a malicious will or forced into malign service, their light sputters and fades within days. Strange accounts exist of a handful of Glimmerkin that have bonded with solitary elders, sharing their small immortality with a later life of protection and memory-keeping.
A Glimmerkin is roughly the size of a clenched fist (scale: about one-third the height of a human hand). Its core is a smooth, opalescent orb of light, with visible, vein-like filaments of ink-dark tendrils that float from its base like the roots of a lantern. The tendrils are diaphanous, slightly iridescent under close inspection, and end in tiny, delicate barbs that never touch solid objects. The light it emits is layered: a warm golden center, softening to pale blue edges; the overall glow flickers with a breathing rhythm rather than a steady burn. When alarmed, its orb pulses into staccato blinks and the tendrils snap inward like a startled moth's wings.
