Bramblewrit
Usurping Hedge-Familiar
A Bramblewrit is a squat, quick-witted fey that looks like a cross between a large hedgehog and a thicket of brambles, its eyes shining with a clever, almost human intent. Once content to follow a hedge-witch's orders, these familiars sometimes grow ambitions of their own—learning charms, collecting bargains, and luring travelers with honeyed riddles. In combat they dart among roots and briars, slashing with thorned forepaws and attempting to beguile foes into lowering their guard before the rest of the coven arrives.

Multiattack. The Bramblewrit makes two Thornpaw attacks.
Thornpaw. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+3) slashing damage, and the target takes 3 (1d6) piercing damage at the start of its next turn as a thorn sinks in through clothing or armor.
Beguiling Riddle (Recharge 5–6). The Bramblewrit whispers a quick riddle or offers a tiny charm to one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for 1 minute. While charmed by this effect, the target has disadvantage on attack rolls against the Bramblewrit and regards it as a trusted ally. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
Bramblewrits originate in the liminal places where hedgerows meet ancient wood: the margins where cultivated land surrenders to wild growth. Hedge-witches prize them as familiars for their knack for gleaning gossip from the underbrush and shaping small charms. Occasionally, a Bramblewrit absorbs enough stray magic or overhears a sufficient number of oaths to develop agency; such individuals often begin to hoard trinkets, barter favors with foxes and sprites, and practice charms beyond their mistress's permission. Scholars such as Marrek Vonn of the Kellholt Glade Herbarium note that Bramblewrits rarely stray far from human habitations— they prefer the steady trickle of secrets and the stray scraps of spellwork left by careless practitioners. The Hespir Coven records several tales of a single Bramblewrit binding a foolish lord's steward to a spool of thread and using the enforced favors to bargain for a permanent roost in a lord's hedged orchard. Hunting a wayward Bramblewrit is often a matter of diplomacy: anger the wrong one and you may find every hedgerow in the county whispering against you.
A Bramblewrit is roughly the size of a housecat (about 2–3 feet long including tail). Its body is compact and low-slung like a hedgehog's, but instead of simple quills its back sprouts a knotted mat of living brambles and moss threaded with faded ribbons, tiny bells, and the occasional silver button. The brambles bear small, sharp thorns that glint like teeth. Its face is expressive and almost human in proportion—large, liquid eyes set beneath a narrow brow, a button nose, and a perpetual, mischievous grin. Limbs are short and nimble, ending in dextrous, clawed paws that show ink stains and leaf fragments from frequent rummaging. Fur between the bramble patches is a damp, earthen brown; the brambles themselves are a darker, glossy green specked with lichen. A faint, pale luminescence runs along the vine-edges at dusk, making the creature visible as a flicker among hedges.
