Thrazhul Shellmaw
Volcanic Lake Colossus
An immense, sleeping dragon-turtle whose carapace smokes like a smoldering island: Thrazhul Shellmaw lies half-submerged in the heart of a volcanic lake, its breath causing steam vents to hiss and bubble. When roused, it heaves with the slow inevitability of tectonic plates, crushing boats beneath armored scutes and sweeping foes into scalding water with a tail like a molten wedge. Its presence reshapes local currents and wildlife — fisherfolk tell of gulls nesting on the ridges of its shell and of geysers that obey its sighs.

Multiattack. The Thrazhul Shellmaw makes two attacks: one Bite and one Tail Sweep.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d10+3) piercing damage.
Tail Sweep. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8+3) bludgeoning damage. On a hit, the target is not only struck but must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone as the tail slams and slides them across the slick, steaming shell.
Thrazhul Shellmaw is said to be older than the crater that hosts it, a relic from a time when dragons and elemental titans contended for dominion over magma and sea. Local legends among the miners of the Kethral Rift say that Thrazhul was born from a dragon dragged into the earth by a furious earthquake, its scales fused with volcanic basalt and cooled magma until it became both beast and basin. Scholars of the Order of Fyrn study Thrazhul not as a mindless monster but as an ecological axis: its slow migrations redirect rivers, its shell collects mineral deposits, and its sleeping cycles trigger seasons of fertility and famine along the lake. Bands of ash-harvesters and the temple of Molren trade offerings to keep Thrazhul drowsy; when its sleep is disturbed, entire shoreline hamlets can be reshaped. The hermit naturalist Mael Tork keeps a battered journal of Thrazhul's breaths and believes the creature remembers specific songlike rhythms of the earth — an idea both feared and coveted by prospectors.
Thrazhul is the size of a small rocky islet: a hulking dragon body fused to a turtle-like carapace. The shell is an irregular mosaic of basalt plates and glassy obsidian ridges, each plate rimmed in rust-red veins where molten rock once flowed. Patches of lichen-like sulfur crust and steaming fissures pock its surface; small steaming pools collect between scutes. Its head is broad and draconic, with a short, blunt snout and layered, plate-like brow ridges that drip mineral deposits. Eyes are ember-bright, rimmed with crusted salt and ash. Limbs are thick pillars of mottled, scale-armored muscle ending in blunt talons suited for grappling rocks as much as prey. The tail is long and flattened, edged with serrated obsidian spines that look like carved volcanic glass. Scale textures alternate from rough, fractured basalt to smoother cooled-lava plates; steam and salt stains streak the underbelly. Overall scale: its carapace spans roughly the height of a single-story building; a human would come only to the knee of its thigh if standing beside it.
