Hoarding Hedge-Dragon
No larger than a housecat, the kithrix is a furtive, button-obsessed hedge-drake that skulks through hedgerows and laundries alike. It moves with coiled energy, snatching buttons and other small trinkets with an almost human-like patience, then tucking them into a secret nest of thorns and lint. Its presence is revealed by a sudden absence of buttons from shirts and coats, and by the tiny, glittering hoard that sometimes betrays the path it has taken.

Multiattack. The kithrix makes two attacks: one Bite and one Button Toss.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4+2) piercing damage.
Button Toss. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage. If the target is wearing at least one visible button or small fastener, the kithrix snatches or shatters one such fastener: the target must succeed on a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw or lose one small item (button, brooch, toggle) from their person—lost items are flung 5 feet in a random direction from the target and may be recovered with a successful DC 12 Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check.
Hoarder’s Reflex. When a Small or smaller unattended object within 5 feet is tossed (thrown by a creature or falls), the kithrix can use its reaction to snatch it with a +5 Dexterity check. On a success it catches the object and adds it to its hoard.
Kithrix are born in the tangles of old hedgerows and abandoned laundry yards where discarded buttons and lost tokens collect beneath brambles. Folktales claim a kithrix hatched from a button sewn into a child’s blanket by a grief-stricken seamstress, but naturalists believe the creatures are a peculiar offshoot of sylvan dragonkind that adapted to live among human refuse and gardens. They favor edges—hedges, stone walls, clotheslines—and are most common near villages that still mend rather than discard garments. The Guild of Needlekeepers keeps meticulous records on kithrix behavior; the guild’s senior archivist, Seneschal Mervin Halport, maintains that these dragons will fiercely defend their button-hoards but avoid direct conflict, preferring misdirection and theft. Local legends around Brambleford Hedge tell of a particular old kithrix, called the ‘Button Steward,’ which organized buttons into patterns that villagers interpreted as omens. Despite their mischief, kithrix are valuable to some—needleworkers sometimes leave small offerings of spare buttons to curry favor and reclaim more valuable lost items.
A kithrix is roughly the size of a housecat (about 10–14 inches long, tail included). Its body is lithe and serpentine, covered in short, moss-green scales flecked with lint-like fibers that cling to fabric. The head is angular with large, reflective eyes and a narrow muzzle ending in a tiny hooked beak used to pry buttons from thread. Two stubby forelegs and hindlegs end in delicate, almost dexterous claws ideal for handling small objects; a thin barbed tail helps it coil around twigs and buttons. Along its spine sit a row of flattened, leaf-like scales that resemble discarded scraps of cloth. When it puffs its throat to show annoyance, tiny scales around its neck flare, glinting like beads or mother-of-pearl—whence it derives its fascination with shiny fasteners.
