Skrittle
Marsh Weaver
The Skrittle looks like a compact, angular spider woven from mud-dark chitin and pale silk; it moves with twitching, unpredictable jerks and can climb any surface like water running up a wall. What makes it terrifying is the way its pale, beadlike eyes fix on a single target while silk threads spool from spines along its abdomen—victims find themselves wrapped before they realize they are trapped, and the Skrittle's bite bleeds slow, burning venom that dulls the senses and leaves foes helpless for rescue.

Multiattack. The Skrittle makes two Bite attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8+2) piercing damage. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. While poisoned in this way, the target has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and takes 3 (1d6) ongoing poison damage at the start of each of its turns. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Web (Recharge 5-6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one creature. Hit: The target is restrained by sticky webbing. A creature restrained by the webbing can use its action to make a DC 12 Strength check, freeing itself on a success. The webbing has AC 10 and 10 hit points. A fire source deals double damage to the webbing and the webbing is flammable.
Skrittles are native to the reed-choked margins of Remel Marsh and the slow rivers that feed it. They are not solitary hunters in the conventional sense but small, semi-social colonists: several dozen will occupy a patch of reeds and submerged roots, patrolling a web-network that stretches between stems and rotten boards. Fishing villages call them "reed-sewn" and leave salted offerings on rotted pylons to keep colonies at the marsh edge from swarming down pathways. Scholars at the Highrough Library recorded the first reliable encounters in the journals of Mareth Duin, who traced the spider's spread along trade routes after floods. Duin suspected Skrittles were attracted to the scent of fermenting crops and mildewed grain. Mercantile guilds such as the Coldford Cartmen have long used smoke and reflective traps to clear Skrittle lanes from wagons; city-keepers mark fresh webs with white chalk so travelers know which boardwalks are safe. Superstitious fishermen whisper that swallowing an intact Skrittle egg can seed long fevers—an old wives' tale that nonetheless keeps certain folk from fishing at dusk.
A Skrittle is roughly the size of a large housecat's head to a human fist (body about 8–10 inches long, legspan up to 2.5 feet). Its carapace is pitted and matte, the color of wet peat, while its abdomen is smoother and almost translucent where silk glands pulse like pale sacs. Each of its eight legs is jointed in abrupt angles and tipped with tiny hooked claws for climbing reed and rope; the undersides of the legs carry rows of minute spinnerets that leave a faint, sticky sheen. The face has four forward-set bead eyes—two large and glossy, two smaller and milky—with chelicerae that end in needlelike fangs. Fine, wispy thread runs from comb-like spines along the abdomen, and when a Skrittle runs its legs over those spines it drums a soft, rhythmic rasp that guides colony movement. Texture notes: the carapace should appear rough and scabbed, silk white and slightly sticky with visible, uneven strands; scale reference: include a human forearm reaching toward the creature for size comparison, and a broken boardwalk or reed clump as environment.
