Sirothic Whorl

Whispering Dust Elemental

A Sirothic Whorl looks like a three- to five-foot high cyclone of gritty sand and twining motes, its core a darker swirl that seems to form a pair of mocking, shifting eyes. It darts with startling speed, brushing past heads to tug at hats and scarves, and leaves behind a faint trail of whispering grit that sometimes repeats fragments of overheard speech. Victims find their favorite cap gone and a half-remembered confidence laid bare in their minds—secrets stolen and carried off on a laugh of wind.

Actions

Multiattack. The Sirothic Whorl makes two Gust Grasp attacks.

Gust Grasp. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and the Whorl attempts to snatch an unsecured hat, hood, scarf, or similar item worn or carried by the target. The wielder must succeed on a Strength saving throw (DC 12) or have the item ripped free and airlifted up to 15 feet away and deposited where the Whorl wishes (the Whorl chooses the location within range). If the target has no such item, the Whorl instead deals an additional 3 (1d6) psychic damage as it brushes past, whispering a fragment of memory.

Pilfering Whisper (Recharge 5-6). The Whorl focuses its murmuring core on one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or take 4 (1d8) psychic damage and have its head filled with a single vivid memory phrase the DM chooses (a secret, a name, or a short confession). The Whorl gains that fragment of information and can use it to try to influence the target or bargain. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and resists having a memory taken.

Reactions

Whirling Evade. When a creature misses the Whorl with a melee attack, the Whorl can shift up to 15 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Lore

Sirothic Whorls are born where long-bottled gossip or tightly held confidences hang in the air—market squares, courthouse plazas, and the dust-choked corridors of ruined caravan forts. They are not true spirits of malice but elemental curiosities, shaped by months or years of overheard bargaining, threats, and declarations. Over time those repeated murmurs knit into a mischievous personality that hungers for trinkets that announce identity (hats, badges, scarves) and for the warm scrapings of private thoughts. Merchants in the Suncracked Flats treat a missing hat as a common nuisance and leave spare headgear pegged to doorframes; they trade stories about the Whorl in a communal ledger curated by the Cartographers' Guild of Verren. The scholar Maerun Thistlescribe wrote an entire pamphlet, The Murmur and the Mote, cataloging the Whorl's patterns: it prefers new or striking headwear, is terrified of closed wells and running water, and sometimes returns stolen items in exchange for a whispered secret known only to the thief. Adventurers who capture a Whorl intact can bargain for half-truths and directions, but many who pry for deep secrets find only shards of memory glued to a cyclone's appetite.

Appearance

Imagine a small whirlwind about as tall as a doorframe, composed of compacted ochre sand and dark gray grit. The core is tighter, almost smoky, with two lighter eddies that roll like pupil-less eyes; these 'eyes' are ephemeral coils of fine dust that widen and narrow when the creature is curious or alarmed. Loose bits of cloth, ribbons, and a few scraps of paper cling to the outer wind, flapping in quick, jittering motions. Texture-wise, the body should read as granular and layered: crosshatched bands for the sweeping winds, stippled specks for the sand motes, and thin, directional lines to imply swift motion. Include a human figure (kneeling merchant or passerby) at roughly the same scale to show the Whorl's size beside ordinary people, and suggest an environment of a sun-baked street corner with a leaning market stall and a scattered ring of footprints.
