Mnemopool
Remnant of a Lake
A shallow, rippling puddle that moves with purpose and nostalgia, the Mnemopool clings to impressions of the vast lake it once was. It will slither across floors toward running water, murky thresholds, and the memory of shorelines, attempting to drown small creatures with cold, remembering tides. To stand before it is to be brushed by a willful fragment of a larger ecosystem — patient, oddly mournful, and surprisingly tenacious.

Splash. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn as the puddle clings to clothing and armor.
Mire Grasp. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 4 (1d4+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 11). The target is restrained while grappled in this way as viscous water holds it close. A creature grappled by the Mnemopool can attempt to escape with a Strength check against DC 11 at the end of each of its turns.
Echo of the Lake (Recharge 5-6). The Mnemopool surges, remembering a larger tide. Each creature in a 10-foot-radius patch of ground the puddle occupies must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and take 3 (1d6) cold damage as water and chill wash through their feet. On a success, the creature takes half damage and isn't knocked prone.
Ripple Pull. When a creature the Mnemopool can see ends its turn within 5 feet of it, the Mnemopool may pull 5 feet toward that creature without provoking opportunity attacks (no save).
Mnemopools are elemental remnants left when bodies of water are violently drained, salted, or bound away. When a lake's spirit is fractured by unnatural means — a dam shattered by sorcery, a binding ritual, or catastrophic drainage — fragments of its consciousness can condense into small puddles that retain the lake's memories: shorelines, currents, the names of fish, and the cadence of storms. These fragments drift for months or decades, searching for conditions that evoke their old home. Local fishermen and marshbound hermits tell of Mnemopools gathering at springs and culverts, whispering to gulls and leading schools of minnows toward safe shallows. Scholars such as the hydromancer Archivist Maret of Sarnell Mire have catalogued their behaviors; Maret theorizes that if several Mnemopools find one another and a continuous water source, they can recombine into a full-grown aquatic elemental over years. The Conservers of the Delta take special measures when they find these puddles, seeing them as both omens of ecological harm and as pieces to be reborn if returned to a suitable basin.
A Mnemopool appears as a shallow, slightly shimmering puddle about two to three feet across when still, its surface roiling with ghostly echoes of waves and ripples. Within the liquid, faint shapes of reeds, pebbles, and a sliver of shoreline shift beneath the surface like a faded map. Its edges thicken into translucent tendrils when it moves; when disturbed those tendrils momentarily hold the silhouette of a splash. The surface reflects light with a cold, silvery sheen and occasionally flickers with a pale bioluminescent patch where a remembered fish darts. Scale: typically about the diameter of a small barrel or a large basin, waist-high ripples against a crouching human. Textures: slick, glassy surface with viscous, oily tendencies at the fringe; the puddle leaves faint damp footprints when it crosses dry ground.
