Fenborne Fiend
A Murkraxe is a hunched, fetid fiend that prowls reed-choked marshes, its maw perpetually slick with rot and the last screams of drowned livestock. It favors moonless nights and shallow water where hooves sink; farmers wake to soggy pastures, ragged fencing, and the bloodless husks of cows and sheep dragged into the mire. It is cruel, cunning enough to follow drovers and wait beneath bridges, and its presence leaves an oily sheen on plants and a metallic tang in the air.

Multiattack. The Murkraxe makes one Bite attack and one Claw attack.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6+2) piercing damage. If the target is a beast of Large or Smaller, the Murkraxe can attempt to begin Devour (see below) instead of dealing normal bite damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) slashing damage.
Devour (Recharge 5-6). The Murkraxe clamps its jaws on a grappled beast of Large or Smaller. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be restrained and begin to be devoured. While devoured, the target takes 7 (2d6) acid damage at the start of each of the Murkraxe's turns and the Murkraxe regains hit points equal to the acid damage dealt. The restrained target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, escaping on a success. If the target dies while devoured, the Murkraxe can use a bonus action to swallow it whole; the swallowed corpse is digested over 1d4 hours, during which time small nutrients heal the Murkraxe 10 HP per hour. A creature that escapes while still alive is expelled into an unoccupied space adjacent to the Murkraxe.
Folktales from river border holdings tell of a thing born when a coven of demon-summoners offered up their herds to curry favor with a lesser marsh demon; the pact was twisted and the swamp was given a hunger that would not be sated. Old journals of the naturalist Jorren Kest, curator at the Bogspire Institute, describe the Murkraxe as a fiend bound to fen and peat, sustained by the flesh and marrow of pastoral creatures. Kest's notes suggest the creature is both predator and territorial guardian of a patch of corrupted wetland. Communities near the Hemrose Mire speak of a ruined barrow called the Sluice of Grendel, where, according to the ferrywright council, a Murkraxe first rose from the spilled blood of sacrificial cattle. The Order of Marshwardens—a loose guild of wetland wardens—has developed crude countermeasures: bells strung on pikes, salt lines, and baited pits. Even so, a lone Murkraxe can rapidly depopulate a small herd, and several rumors claim that hunting one without peat-knives or blessed fire only rouses others from the deep sod.
A Murkraxe stands roughly as tall as a human at the shoulder but is low and forward-leaning. Its skin is a patchwork of slick, oil-dark hide and lichen-like growths that crackle with swamp grime. The head is elongated with a permanent, drooling gape full of serrated, uneven teeth stained brown; two pale, lidless eyes glint like oil droplets. Its forelimbs are thick and muscled, ending in splayed, hooflike claws that shovel mud as easily as tear flesh; the hind legs are slightly shorter, giving it a forward tilt. Ragged tendrils—part mane, part algae—trail from its neck and shoulders. Patches of rotting fur and exposed sinew show yellowed bones beneath in places. Scars from barbed reed and iron traps ring its flanks; a half-buried cattle bell is often tangled in its algae mane as a macabre trophy.
