Tallygrim
Infernal Accountant
A Tallygrim appears as a hunched, ledger-bearing devil whose every movement smells faintly of ink and brimstone. It does not savor murder so much as precision: it stalks debtors and oath-breakers with inexorable patience, offering contracts and counting missed payments on a ledger whose pages are warm with stolen breaths. When it closes that book the world seems to tilt — favors are withdrawn, luck fails, and promises turn to chains.

Multiattack. The Tallygrim makes two Claw attacks.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) slashing damage.
Ledger Lash. Ranged Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4+3) necrotic damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be marked with a Debt for 1 minute. While marked, the target has disadvantage on ability checks to hide or deceive, and if it drops to 0 hit points while marked the Tallygrim's ledger records its name (a +1 permanent liability) unless the mark is removed by a remove curse or similar magic.
Tallygrim are minor devils born in the bureaucracy of the Nine Hells, said to be spawned from the ledgers of an obscure infernal scribe named Vrixen the Clerk. Rather than leading armies, they cultivate obligations: small pacts, promissory notes, and social favors that compound into souls owed. They prefer contracts signed in haste, a whispered bargain in a tavern, or a handprint smeared in bloodless ink. Communities that barter often mark off a corner of a market or temple as an anti-Tallygrim refuge; the Collegium of Balance, a guild of accountants and clerics in the city-state of Harthold, keeps a ledger of its own to trade favors against the devils' claims. Bards speak of a scholar, Master Rulen Kaet, who managed to bargain one Tallygrim into service for a season by paying an impossible sum in riddles. Such tales warn: a Tallygrim can be bargained with, but the cost is always more than the debtor expects.
Roughly the size of a large dog that walks upright, the Tallygrim's skin is papery and gray, like parchment stretched over bone. Its head is a narrow oblong with ink-stained teeth; small, faceted black eyes gleam like polished seals. It wears a tattered waistcoat embroidered with infernal numerals and carries an ever-present brass-bound ledger chained to its wrist. Quill-like fingers end in stubbed talons spattered with black ink that never quite dries. Its tail is a curled strip of leather with a metal nib at the end, used to score entries into the ledger. The ledger itself emits faint sigils along its margin and is warm to the touch.
