Cinderkin

Forsaken Hellpup

A Cinderkin looks like a malformed, ash-smudged puppy with smoldering embers along its flanks and a perpetual, singed grin. It is terrifying not for great power but for its restless, predatory curiosity: it will hound a scent for hours, set little fires with a flick of its tail, and never stop hunting until it has marked something as its own. To face a Cinderkin is to watch a small, eager predator that both wants to be petted and to burn your gloves.

Actions

Multiattack. The Cinderkin makes two Claw attacks.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) slashing damage plus 3 (1d6) fire damage.

Reactions

Fiery Rebuke. When a creature the Cinderkin can see hits it with a melee attack, the attacker takes 3 (1d6) fire damage. The Cinderkin can use this reaction a number of times equal to its proficiency bonus (2), regaining uses after a short or long rest.

Lore

Cinderkin are the lingering offspring of hellhounds born when a fire-touched mortal hearth briefly connected to the lower planes. Castoffs and abandoned young sometimes find themselves stranded on the Material Plane, where their infernal instincts persist even without a true pack. They are rarely the deliberate hunters hellhounds are; instead they form a dangerous, adaptive presence around camps, farms, and lonely crossroads. Farmers whisper that a Cinderkin’s arrival presages a winter of ruined harvests and singed thatch. Scholars of the infernal—like the retired courier-savant Telbin Kesh—note that Cinderkin often bond spontaneously to violent or vengeful households, drawn to anger and grief. The Rivenford Ashwarde militia keeps careful watch where farms meet scrub, for stray Cinderkin will learn people’s routines and exploit them: sneaking near laundry lines to set cloth alight, digging at smokeholes, or leaving scorched pawprints as a call to other infernal things. Legends say a few clever or tamed Cinderkin have been kept as wardogs or pyromancer apprentices, though such relationships are always precarious and often end in charred regret.

Appearance

A Cinderkin stands roughly knee-high to a halfling, about the size of a large terrier. Its coat is coarse and tufted, mottled charcoal and ember-orange; the fur near its spine and tail seems to smoke when it is excited, producing thin ribbons of steam-like ash. The skull is slightly elongated, with a pronounced, almost human-like brow and a row of small, sharp teeth that show when it smiles. Eyes glow like hot coals—dull orange in daylight, bright embers at night. Paws are oversized and callused, with blackened pads and short, curved claws that leave scorched prints. Small, soot-encrusted whiskers sprout around its muzzle, and a faint seam of faint, cracked infernal runes is sometimes visible on its flank, as if a hellish brand is trying to surface. Scattered soot and singe marks decorate its ears and tail-tip; its breath gives off tiny sparks.
