Zultharax
Grotesque Hunger
A hulking, malformed demon whose grin stretches too wide and whose eyes glitter with a ravenous intelligence, Zultharax preys on villages' smallest members. He toys with groups of children — luring them with tricks, stealing their trinkets, and only when they are helpless does he reveal the slick, cavernous maw hidden beneath his chin. What makes Zultharax terrifying is not only his appetite but the polite, almost fatherly manner he uses to learn a child's name before he eats it; survivors describe their lost children calling back to the demon as if to a grandfather, then being dragged into the dark with a laugh that is too sharp to be human.

Multiattack. The demon makes two Claw attacks.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+4) slashing damage.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10+4) piercing damage. If the target is a Small creature or younger (DM's discretion), the target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take an additional 7 (2d6) necrotic damage as Zultharax's hunger gnaws at its life.
Devourer's Whisper (Recharge 5-6). Zultharax emits a soft, coaxing murmur that targets one creature he can see within 30 feet that can hear him. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be drawn toward Zultharax's intent: on its turn it spends its movement moving up to its speed toward Zultharax and has disadvantage on checks and saving throws to resist being grappled or restrained by him until the end of Zultharax's next turn. If the target is a child (DM's call) and the save fails by 5 or more, the target is also frightened for 1 minute.
Hungry Parry. When a creature Zultharax can see hits him with a melee attack, he can add +2 to his AC against that attack, possibly causing it to miss. If the attack misses because of this reaction, Zultharax may immediately make one Claw attack against that creature.
Zultharax is older than many pastoral superstitions; some hedge-witches say he slipped through rents where grief pooled in old wells and bartered for a foothold in human hamlets by giving nightmares a voice. He organizes loose tribes of lesser fiends — the Soughkin — who steal at the edges of civilization and herald Zultharax's coming with mocking lullabies. Villagers who have endured his raids whisper of the 'Night Market,' a ruined barn where the demon parades through trophies that were once children: broken dolls threaded on hooks, tiny shoes nailed to rafters. Scholars of demonology such as Master Vareen of the Black Archive debate whether Zultharax is a singular demon lord or an emergent predator formed from a culture's communal fear of losing children. The Wayward Mothers, a secretive midwives' guild, keep a ledger of barters — herbs, binding charms, and once, a bottled sigh — said to have kept Zultharax at bay. When he raids, he looks for households damaged by grief, hunger, or broken vows; he scents weakness the way a wolf scents blood. He fears loud, holy noise and flame enough to avoid direct confrontation with well-armed groups, preferring to isolate and entrap his prey.
Zultharax stands slightly stooped at just over 6 feet, with disproportionate limbs — long forearms ending in crooked, thick-fingered hands tipped with blunt, yellowed nails. His skin is a patchwork of blanched, pocked flesh and leathery, scale-like plates across his shoulders and chest. The most grotesque feature is the secondary maw beneath his chin: a horizontal slit that opens to reveal multiple rows of needle teeth and a slick, violet tongue. His face above is almost gentlemanly: thin, slick hair combed back, small rimless spectacles that sit impossibly on a face that shouldn't be able to hold them, and eyes that glitter amber with small dark pupils. Scars run like script across his arms — old ritual brands and talon marks. He often wears a tattered child's jacket draped like a trophy. For scale: Zultharax easily fits beneath a standard village doorway but crouches to peer into a cradle, making him simultaneously human-sized and disturbingly intimate.
