Morveth

Necromantic Witch

Morveth is a gaunt, shrill-voiced witch who warps bone and shadow with the same casual cruelty she uses to prune a garden. She favors hit-and-run necromantic tricks and corrosive curses over direct confrontation, forcing foes to choose between suffering a draining touch or facing summoned brittle bone-shards. What makes her memorable at the table is her theatrical cruelty: she speaks to the brittle little skulls threaded on a sash, commands brittle bone-constructs that break and reassemble mid-fight, and retreats behind fog and illusions when wounded, leaving her foes to salvage their dignity from withered bodies.

Actions

Multiattack. Morveth makes two Necrotic Touch attacks or uses Necrotic Touch and Bone Shard.

Necrotic Touch. Melee Spell Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (3d6+2) necrotic damage. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or the damage dealt is also subtracted from the target's hit point maximum until removed by remove curse or greater restoration.

Bone Shard. Ranged Spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 60/120 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d8) piercing damage. If the target is a creature of Large size or smaller and fails a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, the shard embeds and reduces the target's movement speed by 10 feet until it or the shard is removed (remove curse or healing).

Call of the Dry. Morveth conjures brittle bone-constructs from nearby detritus. Each creature of her choice within 30 feet that is unattended bone or hard plant matter becomes a Bone Wisp under her control until destroyed or until Morveth dismisses them (they have AC 12, 5 HP, and make one melee attack for 1d6 piercing). She can have up to four active Bone Wisps at a time. This is a spell-like ability (no components).

Reactions

Shifting Shroud. When a creature she can see targets her with an attack, Morveth can impose disadvantage on that attack roll. She can use this reaction twice, regaining expended uses at the start of her turn.

Lore

Morveth's origins are murmured, not chronicled. Folk in moss-choked hamlets say she began life as a midwife who kept studying the silence between heartbeats; others claim she was a priestess dismissed for seeing the dead as a resource rather than a warning. She makes her lair in ruined chapels and abandoned bone-yards where the soil runs white with weathered bone—places where the living rarely linger and where the dead can be coaxed into service. Her name appears in the notes of the Order of Umber Tomes, a clandestine guild of necromantic scholars that debated whether Morveth's techniques were mad or brilliant. Scholar Berran Hest described her as “a methodist of mortality — she trims vitality like deadwood.” Village legends tell of the Lockless Gate, a ruined monastery Morveth uses as a workshop; a small band of tomb-robbers called the Pale Runners once tried to steal from her and returned missing fingers and full of nightmares. Adventuring parties that underestimate her often find the battle turning into a degrading test of endurance as their wounds refuse to close and bones in the ground answer her summons.

Appearance

Morveth is slight, barely filling a commoner's cloak; her skin is papery and the veins beneath show dark like dried rootwood. Her head is wrapped in narrow strips of cloth, leaving one eye and a wide mouth visible—her eye milky with cataract and unnaturally attentive. A sash of tiny bleached skulls and snapped bone fragments crosses her chest; each skull is drilled and threaded with thin copper wire, and some clatter together when she walks. Her fingers are long and stained with ink and potash; the nails are filed to points and tipped with soot. She carries a walking stick carved from marrow-smooth bone, topped by a hooked vertebra that looks almost ceremonial. Textures: cloth is threadbare linen with dark stains; skin is cracked parchment; bones are polished and pitted with age. Scale reference: Morveth stands about as tall as a human commoner (roughly 5'4"), and the skulls on her sash are about the size of a fist. Environment hint: a ruined chapel nave strewn with ossified benches and low fog crawling along flagstones.
