Gurthak Stonehand
Iron-Fisted Ascetic
A squat, coiled dwarf who fights like a struck boulder, Gurthak Stonehand moves with preternatural timing: fists flicker, feet slide, and opponents find themselves knocked breathless by precise, unarmored strikes. He carries no weapon, yet his palms seem to carry the weight of iron and old vows; each blow leaves opponents aching as if a hammer met bone. In a fight he is relentless, using disciplined footwork and short bursts of impossible speed to punish anyone who underestimates a monk carved from mountain resolve.

Multiattack. The monk makes three Unarmed Strike attacks.
Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage.
Stunning Palm (Recharge 5-6). When Gurthak hits a creature with an Unarmed Strike, he can spend the momentary breath of focus to force the target to make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of Gurthak's next turn.
Flurry of Blows (Bonus Action, costs 1 Ki). Gurthak makes two Unarmed Strike attacks as a bonus action.
Deflect Blow. When Gurthak is hit by a melee attack, he can use his reaction to add +4 to his AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss. If the attack still hits, Gurthak reduces the damage by 1d8 + 2.
Gurthak Stonehand is a title earned within the Order of the Stone Palm, a small monastic brotherhood tucked into the cracked spires above the mining hamlet of Karstwell. The order trains dwarves who have renounced the forge and the war-axe, teaching them to make their bodies into tools of restraint and breaking. Stories say the order's founders once closed a deep cavern maw with nothing but palms and prayer, earning the order grudging respect from neighboring clans. Caravans and city guards tell different tales: some claim Gurthak and his brethren wander as itinerant keepers of balance, resolving disputes with blunt, nonlethal force; others whisper of an old feud between the Stone Palm and the Black Sprocket Guild, a band of mechanists whose clockwork constructs learned to fear a monk's strike more than a hammer. Archivist Brennulf of the Karstwell Abbey recorded that the Stone Palm intervened in the "Glassbridge Uprising," where Gurthak is said to have immobilized a warlord single-handedly, later returning from the field with hands scorched but unbroken.
Gurthak is a broad-shouldered dwarf standing roughly 4 feet tall, with limbs thick like root-gnarled timber rather than the sleek lines of a human martial artist. His skin is weather-beaten, a muted stone-gray, crisscrossed by pale scars that form almost ritual patterns across his forearms and knuckles. He shaves his head save for a narrow braided crest down the crown, and his beard is kept short and tied into a stub at the chin. His wrists are wrapped in ink-dark linen bandages worn smooth; the knuckles show polished callus and faint iron staining from years of striking. He wears simple, loose monk's robes — muted brown linen, torn at the knees and patched with scraps — and a cord of the Order hangs at his waist with a small stone token. Size references: roughly chest-high to a standing human adult; when seated, his head comes to about a human's mid-thigh. Textures: rough, stony skin; tightly bound linen wraps; dull metal token, matte and pitted.
