Marruk's Grin
Cunning Goblin Warband
A single creature-sized horror of motion and teeth, Marruk's Grin is a tightly knit warband of goblins that fights like a single thinking thing. They swarm, feint, and vanish in a puff of smoke and rattle, using small traps and false retreats to funnel prey into knife-range. What makes them terrifying is their coordination: every cut and toss is part of a plan, and they celebrate victory by pinning tokens from their victims onto a gnawed bone halberd that serves as the band's standard.

Coordinated Assault (Recharge 5-6). The warband unleashes a sudden coordinated strike. Each hostile creature in a 10-foot-radius chosen point within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone as small nets and ropes entangle them. A creature that succeeds is pushed 5 feet away (their choice) and suffers no further effect.
Multiattack. The warband makes three attacks: two with Scimitar and one with Javelin.
Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+2) slashing damage.
Javelin. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) piercing damage.
Tripwire Net (Recharge 6). The warband tosses a tangled net at a point within 30 feet. Each creature in a 10-foot cube must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or become restrained and restrained creatures take 7 (2d6) slashing damage from hidden razors. A restrained creature can use its action to make a DC 12 Strength check, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Tactical Retreat. When a creature the warband can see hits it with an attack, the warband can use its reaction to Disengage and move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Marruk's Grin was forged from a coalition of several desperate goblin tribes driven from the low marshes by a rising human militia twenty winters ago. The band's true leader, a scar-faced goblin tactician named Marruk Split-Grin, taught them to operate like a pack of scavengers and saboteurs rather than crude raiders. Over time they adopted a repertoire of hit-and-run ambushes, collapsing rope bridges, and tripwire nets, turning ruined watchtowers and ruined farmsteads into layered killing grounds. Scholars of goblinoid culture, such as the antiquarian Jorrek of Vissport, have noted that Marruk's Grin uses a coded system of whistles and bone-clicks that allow them to coordinate across sightlines — a trait that makes them the favored hirelings of smuggling rings like the Night Oxbow and the rogue militia called the Broken Ledger. They lair in places with vertical complexity — ruined keeps, collapsed grain silos, and vine-choked watchtowers — and maintain caches of crude alchemical smoke pots and collapsing plank tricks. Folk tales warn that a group wearing mismatched bits of armor and laughing like dry leaves is planning something worse than a simple raid.
Visually, Marruk's Grin appears as a compact cluster of ragged goblins moving with the synchronicity of a single organism. The band numbers roughly a dozen and a half figures of varied size, each wearing scavenged leather and odd plates scavenged from fallen soldiers; their leader, Marruk, wears a crooked cap fashioned from a broken kettle and a string of tiny teeth and coin shards across his chest. Many carry short scimitars and rusted buckles, a few have patched crossbows, and two larger goblins bear a crude halberd-like pike used to mount trophies. Texturally, the scene should show rough leather, patched chain links, filigree of bone charm decorations, and cloth banners caked with mud. Scale: the band is about the height of a human doorway when crouched and clustered; depict a human silhouette at the edge of the composition for reference. Emphasize twitching poses, darting eyes, and the chaotic arrangement of weapon points and ropes ready to be sprung.
